Firstly a big thank you to all on this forum who helped me prepare for the selection/interviews and arrange visits to BRS and LATCC. I don't think I would have got anywhere without you guys.
Despite all the help I failed the interview and understand I cannot receive any feedback, not even which part (or parts) I failed.
It's a real b*****d but I'll be back next year for more. My advice to anyone applying is read this forum carefully and take on board all the advice in the sticky thread at the top; it is all relevant and mostly correct.
Once again, thanks to all.
Ryan

NATS HR will not give any feedback these days after attempts at getting a student ATCO post, they even refuse for internal candidates.
What a great way of getting to Our 21 Destinations by endearing such affection for a department in this company....

Very sorry to hear your news but don't despair.. When I left school they refused me as an ATCA... but by devious means and lots of effort and even more luck I eventually made it and spent 30+ years working Heathrow as an ATCO. Don't give up and hope you make it next time.

Commiserations from me too, but as others have said, don't give up if that is what you want. Put it down to experience that will be to your advantage next time. Use the time meanwhile to visit other units and find out more about the job. I expect you have Duke's book on ATC - I think that is the best on the market, very few criticisms.
I thought the "in" thing with the Personnel mob was "feedback" - they are forever wittering about it. A pity that they can't have the decency just to write to any candidates a couple of sentences about where they went right and where they went wrong. Sounds as if they are afraid of exposing themselves to being challenged, but this secret squirrel attitude does nothing for their already-tarnished image. Who do these people think they are? They should be there to serve the interests of the company and the individuals.
Rant over. Good luck for the future and the next time.

Would there not be some sort of data protection issue there?
I could be completely off the beaten track but I thought people were supposed to be able to see any information that is held about themselves by any company?
Not the first time I've heard of NATS refusing to provide information to people on assessments made of them though.
I wonder, is there any truth in the story of the phantom third file at the college of knowledge?

The phantom third file?
You mean you never heard of it?
Rumour has it that at the college of knowledge there are three files kept on you while training.
The Green file - End of course assessments, verbal results, OJTI reports etc. The important stuff!
The Orange file - Every formative and summative you ever sat in the place.
Now for the myth..........
The P45 coloured file! - Purple
Heard tell that if you ever go for a training review there is another seperate file on you but no one knows whats in it and your never allowed to see it.
Mainly because you don't know it exists!
Like I said, probably just a myth but everyone loves a conspiracy theory!!!!!!!!
Ooooooh, lets make up more stories to wind up the mobile grade operational resources.

Freedom of Information
If you are eager to get hold of feedback from your interview, you could always put in a request to see your folder under the 'Freedom of Information' act which came into force a few months ago.
Worth a try perhaps?
Worth a try perhaps?
I am not sure that NATS has status as a public body covered by the Freedom of Information Act, it is a public/private partnership (allegedly) trading as a private limited company.
However, assuming it is covered, then it is still not possible to obtain information since:
In addition, even if the data could be released, NATS would be entitled to charge you for it as well !!
However, assuming it is covered, then it is still not possible to obtain information since:
•If the personal data is about the person requesting the information, then there is no right to know under the Freedom of Information Act. There is, in other words, an absolute exemption. However, any such requests automatically become subject access requests under the Data Protection Act and must be treated as such. This means that despite the exemption under the Freedom of Information Act, the applicant has a right to his or her information under the Data Protection Act.
• If the personal data is about someone other than the applicant, there is an exemption if disclosure would breach any of the Data Protection Principles. (This is the main issue explored in this guidance.) There are also some special rules to be applied in cases where the personal data are about someone who has formally objected to their disclosure. The term, “third party data,” is used to describe personal information about someone other than the applicant.
•The term “personal data” is defined in the Data Protection Act, as amended by the Freedom of Information Act. “Personal data” is information about a living individual from which that individual can be identified. It may take any of the following forms
• Computer input documents;
• Information processed by computer or other equipment (e.g. CCTV);
• Information in medical, social work, local authority housing or school pupil records;
• Information in some sorts of structured manual records;
• Unstructured personal information held in manual form by a public authority.
The last of these categories was introduced into the Data Protection Act by FOI. For public authorities it means that, in effect, any information held about living individuals is potentially accessible under the Freedom of Information Act. However, in the case of this last type, which is sometimes referred to as category e) data, there are some special rules designed to reduce the administrative burden which requests for information are likely to place on authorities. For private sector organisations, the definitions in the Data Protection Act are unchanged.

Code of practice Data Protection Act [2002]
All employers have a duty to provide you with any notes taken in your interview; prior to this you could only see interview notes if you were making a complaint against the employer.
