Listening to ATC
I think it would be very interesting to listen to ATC communications. Is there a way I can do that on the internet or on a radio? (I live in Sweden - if that makes a difference...)
Thanx,
Astrid

Astrid,
In the UK, although technically illegal, many of us monitor ATC on dedicated airband radio receivers. The Radiocommunications Agency is a government department which monitors use of the radio spectrum and it is normal practice for the RA to turn a blind eye to the use of these receivers, as long as us listeners are discrete.
I don't know what the law is on this subject in Sweden. It might be an idea to get in touch with the Swedish Home Affairs Department (if that is what it is called) to determine policy. There are several manufacturers of quality radio receivers out there but I'd better not name any because that would be advertising and the PPRuNE bosses would probably have me shot !
Hope this helps anyway. Good luck.

Just one correction TGU, there's no such animal as "technically illegal". An act is either prohibited by law (therefore illegal) or it's not (so it's legal). So far as I can recall, it is illegal to listen to airband radio unless you are licenced and are doing so for approved purposes. When I got my radio licence (many years ago) I had to sign a declaration regarding confidentiality of comms etc.
You are entirely correct though, that the RA seem to follow Nelson's lead and turn a blind eye to people listening to what they shouldn't. That said, I've heard of police officers moving against people using scanners.

Thanks Jerricho I was just going to look for that but you have saved me the trouble
The Radio Communications Agency no longer exists, its role has been taken over by Ofcom.

In Sweden you can buy a scanner and it is legal to listen to anything you like (police, the neighbours wireless telephones, ATC ). But it is illegal to tell anyone what you have heard.
