Semple gets his reward
I am sure you would all like to join me in
congratulating William Kerr Semple on the
award of CBE in today’s New Year’s honour
list, for services to Bill Semple (oops) I mean
Air Transport.
Let his record speak for him. NERC massively
over budget, over 5 years late. Insufficient
staff to man it properly. Massive increase in
delays in 2001 (pre September 11th). Big fat bonus
in 2001 whilst the rest of us were told
we hadn’t earned one.
Perhaps I was right - services to Bill Semple.
More job cuts and no funds for a pay rise?
Makes it all worth while doesn’t it?

I think a morale boosting competition is in order.
In Semples case, what does CBE stand for? Remember, they were hoping for knighthoods - Sir Semple!
Bets on how long it will be before he is finally retired? Or will he go to Swanwick and job share with all the others?
Come on TAG - finally get a grip - if you REALLY want to save some cash - look no further. <img src="mad.gif" border="0">

Great Unmanaged. Bill Semple has actually retired twice from NATS and does not work for them. He sits on the board as a Government appointed director so moaning at TAG isn't going to get anywhere.
Having worked with him for over 20 years I actually think he deserves a medal in whatever form it comes. Having to put up with Government policy change after change would sicken anyone. Whatever NATS has achieved in the last 30 years at least Bill always had its best interests at heart. Nobody's perfect as he will readily admit. <img src="smile.gif" border="0">

I wonder if he really got his gong for undergoing the severe grilling he received at the hands of the awesome Mrs Dunwoody when he appeared before her committee. He was, if memory serves me correctly, attempting to justify ppp. Of course he failed as it was and is unjustifiable. A brave if somewhat foolish quest.

I get it! If you are brave but foolish and retire twice you get a CBE. The rest of you ATCO's out there should not try this.
Being brave, foolish and so terribly wrong should not a CBE get - not matter how hard he tried. Still - Elton John got a Knighthood. Go figure!

Bright .. I just happen to have worked around the country a great deal and came across him on lots of occasions. I never once found him anything other than considerate in his dealings with all the NATS staff. It is easy to point a finger at "them" and say they screwed it up. I completely disgagree with privatisation and took every opportunity to say so to Bill Semple and lots of other people. Just because he had another view doesn't stop me respecting the person.
Considering all the dopes of Ministers who have meddled in NATS affairs over the last 30 years I still think that as an ATC service it is pretty damned good. Some of that credit goes to people like Bill Semple as well as all of the staff.
I for one am happy to give a bit of credit when it is due.

How many golden handshakes for a knighthood ???
I have to say it must be deserved. How hard a life it must be to sit in a plush office, reclining in a soft leather chair listening to government ministers bleat on while you figure out what to do with your hefty pay packet.

Bill Semple may well be a "decent sort of chap", but then there are lots of decent people within NATS.
The key fact is that, despite this, He got it WRONG many times at SMG level. Nothing too bad about that, we all make mistakes, but not a reason for giving him a gong surely?
But that's the way the "Honours" system works, is it not?
First against the wall when the revolution comes? That'll be Mr. Cheese and Ham. Any other candidates?
