When it's quiet?
Driving back from the Canaries tonight it was mighty quiet. I got to wondering how you chaps downstairs amuse yourself between the "radio check" calls.
Well I got home and read karanks millibar-hectopascal conversion table in the millibar thread and I thought they can't all be that mathematically inclined.
I have in my head an image of a ping pong table behind the screens with the handicap system depending on the length of the lead to the cans.
Please tell me I'm correct

Many moons ago the night shift was passed with the odd game of indoor cricket, played the length of the centre, using any handy equiment for wickets and bat. But generaly the ball was made from a mass of paper tape, commonly the pacific low level annal for 500mb etc. or some other useless bit of information. the looser being required to make the next hourly tea run.

Many moons ago we had the LATCC Grand Prix.
Ahh I rember the tension before the starter dropped the watch log, the battle at the first Flow corner, the long straight down towards the West End hairpin where speeds were only limited by how fast you could propel your ex WD swivel chair (while sitting in it )
Cheered on by the crowds (of cleaners) on the TMA grandstand seats you would negotiate the north bank chicane to finish , foot flat to the floor at supervisors desk.
Official scrutinising would then take place in the supervisors office followed by presentations on the podiun....
Happy days... Rgds BEX

Carpet Bowls was a favourite at Prestwick Tower, along with Baseball - catches were permitted off any of the VCR windows.
These days at ScATCC, the old favourite of reading the job ads in Flight and dreaming of a life outside of NATS.........
Also, we had a particularly good game of cricket at the millennium, until someone bowled a cake and the batsman connected, we were picking up crumbs for days afterwards.

Thank-you AT and AI - you rotten swine!!!
Actually it turned out to be quite fun - div in TWA 767 was typical of the chatty TWA guys we used to get in years ago. I fell about when he said "The Ferris Wheel isn't working then?" as he came over the London Eye!!!

Cricket also a favourite.
If you have a trainee with you then you can unroll the matress and grab a bit of shut-eye . Backgammon also a favourite but got to be careful your opponent doesnt nudge the odd checker whilst you are talking to aircraft.
A recent favourite (until it was removed ), was a network game of Hearts set up on the weather radar computer.
Wait until the supervisor is asleep and arranging for everyone in the room to hit their intercom button to him at once.

Off topic but what a pleasure to see Scott Voigt chipping in. Long time hero of the bulletin boards long before PPRuNE came about 6 years ago.
He has got to take a lot of the credit for pilots and ATC getting to communicate through his work on places like Compuserve's Avsig forum.
Massiv' respect, as I believe the young people say.
Regards from the Towers

Hi Rob;
Thanks, <s> I didn't know that my name was known outside of a few places here in the states...
We are having a conference called "Communicating For Safety" the end of September in Denver. It's an interchange between pilots and controllers as well as talking with some of the powers that be... I would LOVE to see folks from the other side of either pond <G>, to be there.
regards

I'll echo the welcome to Scott. A true catalyst in improving pilot/controller relations, especially with his unstinting work in the US Operation Raincheck programme.
He and his wife are also fantastic hosts. I'll always remember the time he gave me a go in the ZFW simulator, though I think my ICAO phraseology threw all these deep South 'pilots' more than a little
Having suffered some PC woes over the last year and losing e-mail addresses, I now have somewhere to get in touch again.
All the best Scott.

Thanks Guys
Particularly enjoyed the Grand Prix
With the introduction of the A3XX I look forward to nine holes of golf which it looks exponentionally likely to be offered by some airlines.

Hi Lon;
I am back on AVSIG again but this time through the web. It's a whole lot cheaper than going through compuserve <G>... I stay busy on NATCA.net too...
Boy am I ready to make my way back to Europe for some cooler temps as well as some FUN! Only about a month and a week or so to go <sigh>...
Take care
