Question ATC in China

A number of years ago I read that China was "by-passing" a great deal of navigation infrastructure (VORs, NDBs, Radars, etc.) and moving directly to satellites and GPS.

I know they've opened a couple of ACCs in the past couple of years along with updating airports. Does anyone know if they are using something like ADSB for ATC?

Does anyone have any contacts in China (anywhere in Asia, for that matter) they'd care to share? China could well the future in many respects, aviation included. I'd like to learn more.

They don't use ADS - not on any route I've flown. And there are plenty of VORs and NDBs around the place too - all the airways are aligned on them.

I don't know about the navaids, but they're certainly still buying plenty of radars. The only authority actively pushing ahead with ADS-B is AirServices Australia.

Here's a related link regarding NAVAIDS and ATC in Africa:

Thanks for the information about China.

Airservices Australia has had a fair bit to do with China in the past couple of years. It seems that every 6 months we have another delegation from China touring the Brisbane Centre, looking at our ATM system, Eurocat 2000.

I think that they are trying to modernise their ATM system and thats why they're looking at our TAAATS. Oz and China are similar in size, radars, navaids etc. Consequently, they're looking at how Oz does things.

CHINA - AND AFRICA

Here's another article resulting from the Africa regional meeting of IFATCA. It seems Africa is positioning itself dead last in aviation modernization:
Africa

Also, here's an article about China's use of the Eurocat system:
China

They're both fascinating areas for those interested in ATC.
