Red face Kensington @ Low Level !!?

Last night (July 14th) I was having a quiet pint in a pub in Kensington with a few mates.
Suddenly we became aware of the approaching sound of jet engines at fairly high thrust. As this noise grew louder rapidly almost every conversation in the pub stopped. As it continued to increase in volume I guessed that it was either a low level fly past by an RAF fighter, or that someone was about to crash into central Kensington.
As the noise reached an earsplitting crescendo I glanced out a window and saw a T-tail a/c that looked very like a DC-9 passing over the building at no more than 500 or 600 feet, heading roughly northbound. This was at about 2115 local time.

Can any LATCC controller who was on duty last night please enlighten me and my mates as to what the hell was happening?
