Military Area Radar Services to NATS ?

I have heard a rumour that all Military area radar services are to be subsumed by NATS in 2008. Can anyone provide more info on this subject ?

NATS to take over military area radar

From the moment NATS split off from the CAA and became a business, there has always been a possibility of them bidding to undertake military area radar services in the UK. A well known ex-RAF wg cdr is now employed by NATS at Swanwick - probably to prepare the ground for such a bid. However, considerable obstacles litter the path, not least the issue of where NATS will find the controllers to undertake this task. The obvious solution is to employ ex-military controllers on some kind of cross-over license, but I can imagine how this would go down with SRG, GATCO and the Unions. Also, although it might result in a small financial saving for the MOD, whether such a new arrangement would still offer the current flexibility required by military operations is debateable. Finally, if you have a seat at the table you can have some influence on what's on the menu, but once you decide to leave the room, whatever influence you have will leave with you.

Oh, .............. and a proportion of controllers would have to sign-up for reserve service in order that they could populate a tent in the far flung reaches of the old British Empire.

2008 is a millenium away in political terms, and that's what any decision will come down to - politics of the day.
