You better hope for a posting to Al Ain then (vacancies - apply within) - never gets over 49.9 degrees, and is rarely humid, not like on the coast - Yuk!

AED 300,000 Huh......
I guess you would just have to wear an "I am not American" T-shirt everywhere.
...and who needs educated kids?
At least I could have a reasonably comfortable retirement - whilst the kids stayed home and got unemployment. I wouldn't charge them much rent

Aw come on F3SS, you really enjoyed the beating!!!!! Big buxom blondes is the rumour?
Apparently Muscat will be looking to expand. Limited details at this stage. A bit sceptical on Doha. Not much info coming from there regarding working conditions. If it is anything like the airline operating out of there then be careful.
If the rumours are true then the money sounds similar to UAE but with better accomadation.

Ok, I don't know which planet two dogs is from, but to say you won't be sending money home because you will be spending it all educating your kids????? Kids education is paid for by the company, so unless you have more than 2 kids, what is the problem. The facts are, that unless you choose to eat out at flash restaurants every other night, and get a babysitter in a few times a week, and go out drinking, you most certainly can save money here, and at some point send home that money.
Now, as far as general costs go, I can only compare to Oz, but going out here, is about on a par with Oz. The beer is more expensive, but the cab ride home is a fraction of the cost, and the baby sitter, is at least a 1/3 of the cost of what it was back home. Living here, generally is about the same overall cost of what it was back in Oz, with the big difference being, back home you were paying for your water, electricity, schooling for kids, mortgage, transport to and from work, clothes to wear to work, airfares for your holidays, telephone rent, income tax. So to say that you wouldn't come here for the money, is a crock of ****.
Unless you get really wound up in the good life here (which is easy to do, but also great fun), financially the Middle East can be very lucrative, even with the sucky exchange rate right now.
As far as Doha goes, for a guy with kids, the lack of education costs in the package, would make it a no go, when compared to SERCO. As a single guy financially it would be better off, but trading the UAE nightlife for the Qatari nightlife, would be a struggle I think. Include Education costs in the package, and considering that you would be in a villa, I think SERCO would be really struggling to retain the staff here.
Dr Evil, I think you'll find that when you factor in the lack of schooling and the lack of Gratuity, the financials of the package for a guy with 2 kids is about the same as here, and just the accomodation is better. As I said for a single guy financially it is a much better package.
Is it true that Muscat has taken the Sri Lankan route when it comes to ATC Recruitment??????

ANSA
Have to agree with you on the Oz cost of living now. the recent trip home reinforced the fact that things are not as bad here cost wise as one thinks, in fact a beer down the rocks cost me almost twice as much. Fuel down south was peaking at $1.10 and in the NT $1.14 a litre! Overall I was gobsmacked at how much things were around the place. However, the beer and McDonalds price index are my bench mark and without a doubt Oz capitals were more expensive!
As for the Muscat/Sri Lanka controllers option, believe that has come to a grinding halt.

What's up Doc?
Yes thank you, I do scan my radar very precisely and I also add a bit of pre-planning. Salary/package is what I look at and what I currently get with Serco, as a package, works our similar. But as we do not know the facts (anyone from Doha welcome here) the speculation is great.
ANSA has hit the nail on the head, well said.

I have been following the Doha situation myself (probably from the same source there as everyone else!)
Initially the 300,000 with villa does seem good, even with 2 kids schooling to take care of. However the lack of any guarantee of a gratuity worries me a little. For me there would have to at least be a gratuity for me to think about leaving a pension scheme here. I would have thought it would be covered by the labour laws anyway, but prefer to have it in black and white in my contract.
I had heard previously that there aren't any villas available due to the Asian games. Anyone know where they've managed to find some and what they're like?
.....P.S.
What\'s the news on Muscat? TWR/APR or Area?
