Thanks to Humberside Approach
Felt the urge to say thanks to the Humberside Approach controller talking to G BODC at about 1940 local yesterday. This was my first solo landaway navex so I was a little nervous to begin with...
On the way back to Sherburn from Humberside, Approach told me about unidentified traffic in my 10 o'clock, 700' above, range 8 miles and closing. For the life of me I couldn't see it and, getting a little worried, said so. The controller I think knew I was a solo student and set about calling the aircraft with some thing like 'Calling aircraft tracking North along the Trent at 2700' - Humberside Approach'. Wonder of wonders they answered. The next call to them from Humberside took away all the tension - "G SACR sqawk ident - Big Brother is watching you!"
It turned out that the other aircraft was also from Sherburn with one of our instructors in it so I was able to check it's position by radio as we approached the airfield even though I never saw it until we got to the circuit (they saw me and had turned behind me)
Two lessons for me here.
1 ATC are really helpful and not quite as scary as I'd first thought.
2 Spotting another aircraft is difficult, even when they are at fairly close range and you know where to look.
So, just in case you read this, many many thanks to the Humberside Approach controller talking to G BODC at about 1940 local yesterday. You really helped.

Sorry for posting the same thing(ish) twice but wasn't sure where to put it!
The thanks were the most important, but I thought the guy at Humberside deserved a mention on the 'humour' thread too...
Cheers
