I don't know you but, as someone who has a nearest and dearest fighting cancer I can understand what you are going through, my prayers are with you as well. You can beat it!
All the best

Reg,
along with others I remember you and wish you all the best, with retirement and everything else.
Remember we wouldn't be doing the job today if it wasn't for people like you. (that may be a good or a bad thing depending on how you look at it! )
Cheers,
Northerner

...and when I was a 6 weeker at Farnborough I was shown a pic of you and your colleagues at the base of the tower sat on chairs.
There were two things that remained a constant between the 1970's (?) and the late 90's!
A tenner to charity for the first person who guesses what they are!!!!!!
(No - HM - YOU can't play!)
Mrs M (formerly Miss B!) sends her regards.

Ah-ha - thought HM was you but never liked to ask!
We are all glad that the employer has done the decent thing at last and wish you all the very best for your retirement, Reg.
The simulator rooms at CATC will be a lot quieter!

Bye Bye Reg, but hello to the world of retirement
Memory lane? Remember when the watchman was being installed and we spent the summer doing Radar from the boss's office, complete with blackout curtains and overworked aircon unit. It used to pour water all over the floor!
Thanks for lots of Show memories as well. The Antonov flew down the display line over N1, realised that the runway was over to left, swerved, bounced, tore up the grass and finally came to a halt? Was that you? I was on the balcony at the time on a break. Nearly Sh*t myself.
All the very best Reg,

Good luck Reg!
I well remember our days together at CATC and managing the aerodrome courses together.
For me there are a couple of classic memories of you...a favourite is your description of yourself as an "early hang glider pilot, but I was lighter then!" Yes, you are a big man, but all that know you will agree that you have an even bigger heart.
I'm sure many students will remember (not always fondly) practice oral boards! My favorite memory of you when we were conducting such events together was your question on "authorisation for work in progress on the aerodrome". As I recall, you brilliantly played the part of a non too bright labourer, complete with varied accents. Your speed of thought and the quick response to what the poor student (acting as the AD controller) thought was a winning point was a joy to watch. Although I laughed about it then, and now, your obtuse answers were immensely instructive as the the students' very often had no idea about how a simple request or action could be misinterpreted.
On this occasion, you had run the student through the of use of radio (no not Radio 1 which you had pre-tuned on your transitor radio), aerodrome layout and markings (so, the big straight road is a runway, whats that for then, is that how I get to my work site?), light signals and so much more. The final question you were trying to wring from the student was that with your (the labourer's) lack of knowledge of aerodrome environment/safety/difference between runways and taxiways - well everything actually - was for the student to ask if you would like an escort. One (Hank, was that you?)duly did. "Would you like an escort?" "No, I've got a Transit!" replieds Reg as quick as a flash. That was it for me, a crumpled heap on the floor.
Fond memories....
Take care, and give my love to Di.

Reg,
Your Snow and Ice lecture was one of my favorites - I can still recall the definition of 'Slush'.
It was a honour and a pleasure to have been trained by you.
All the very best for the future!

Reg,
Whenever time at college and instructors are mentioned, there is no trying to put a face to your name. I am sure everybody you have taught remembers at least one of your lectures or sim runs. For all the right reasons.
I wish you a very 'long' and 'healthy' retirement.
Good luck!

During your 38¼ years in ATC, I’m sure I met you in a previous incarnation.
A guy with your sense of humour deserves a long and happy retirement.
Good luck with your encounter with 'Jimmy Dancer'.
And retirement life in the Antipodes has a lot to offer...

Thanks for the many kind messages. They are really appreciated.
I can't believe the interest that this topic has created, after all, it's only some old f*rt saying goodbye!
AlanM , I see you have had no contestants for your competition. I guess the question was TOO HIGHBROW for them. If you really want to send a tenner to charity, Jacqui Rhodes, Room DF4 at the College is organising a collection for Cancer Research in lieu of a leaving present for me.

"A tenner to charity" - a grand idea, consider it done.
Good luck Reg, I hope you have a long and happy retirement.

Reg,
What can i say.
The whole of my college course there was a fear factor that was installed in all the cadets and some of the instructors loved it.However, there was one down to earth instructor who treated you like humans and actually enjoyed the lectures and sims that he gave . I know that a guy like you will beat this hiccup that life has dealt and you will enjoy every penny of that lump sum.
Many fond memories of your lectures and sim instruction!!!!
