ATC Centre Facilities

Just a quick enquiry as to the availability of, or lack of rest/recreation facilities in ATC centres around Europe.

Is there a minimus standard, or does it depend on the individual centres.

Also was there any consultation with the staff members prior to their development????

Just Curious!!!!

They don't consult operational staff about operational equipment - why should rest areas be any different

We have a few rest room areas (kitted out with comfy chairs and sofas, newspapers and satellite television) and a few kitchen areas (microwaves, sink, refrigerators, toasters, drinks and snacks machines).

To while away some of those long night shifts we also have DVD playing and games console equipment available - provided by kindly watch members

Cool

All of our Centers are different, but at Fort Worth we have a break room with a wide screen TV (High Definition) which was bought by the cafeteria committee (employees). The cafe is closed right now, but we hope to have a new contractor installed by the middle of June.

We have a quiet room which we use for relaxing and reading. We have two couches in there and about 7 or 8 recliners. (the employees paid for the recliners.) Outside we have a garden area under the trees (employees installed, notice the recuring thread here <G>) and some frisbee toss stuff.

In the basement we have a workout room which has some govt. equipment in it and some that was bought by employees.

We have no standards as far as I know for these rooms. However, there are standards for the cafe...

Hope that helps

regards

Scott

PS. The union office has an X-box to play on with 36 inch TV as well as two computers to play around on.

The best rest-room I've ever seen was at Heathrow Tower, on the ground floor. Execellent lighting, chairs and an all-services TV (which the staff didn't have to pay for, unlike West Drayton!). Also a superb kitchen next door.

Sad day when they closed the bar at West Drayton. Night shifts don't have quite the same appeal now, hic. ;*)

In Oz it would appear we're fairly well catered for.

In Brisbane Centre where I work we have;

- a gym equipped by the company and provided free to all staff. Open Monday to Friday from about 6.30am til 5.00pm, and staffed by fitness leaders.

- recreation area that contains couches, pay TV (foxtel paid for by the company), dining table and chairs, galley with two microwaves, dishwasher etc. It also has 5 computers (we all have internet and intranet access), and a quiet reading area which contains numerous couches and comfy chairs. A favourite place for arvo naps by controllers.

- 5 stand down rooms containing beds for staff to sleep before or after a night shift (known in Oz as a "doggo") with a shower room across the hall.

- canteen open 7 days a week and prices are subsidised by the company. Open from 6.30am til 7.00pm every day. Sort of like a cafe type arrangement with dining tables and chairs and a large TV to watch.

Melbourne Centre is pretty much the same as far as I'm aware.

Swanwick facilities pretty much as described by DP of the Brisbane Centre.

We also have a pool table, snooker table, some fruit machnes, sports hall for footy, basketball etc. Our gym has a fitness instructor available during office hours. Sky TV with all the sports channels - quite popular.

Although we all have web access, it is very tightly controlled and none of the PCs have Flash installed so you can't play daft games on breaks

Good point here about the Internet access Vector.

Boo sucks to Websense (the name of the firewall / filter used by our IT bods)

I should have added... Heathrow Tower had no less than three restaurants and several bars when I started there in the very early 70s.

One restaurant was full waitress service too..... but that was in the days when ATCOs enjoyed a bit of status and wore suits or blazers!!!!
