TORONTO - Search crews are patrolling the waters near Toronto after officials lost contact with a six-seater plane trying to land at the Toronto City Centre Airport.

Air traffic controllers lost contact with the twin-engine private plane around 10 a.m. Monday. The plane, believed to be a Beechcraft Baron from Chicago, was about five kilometres from the airport.

Search crews with Toronto police's marine unit are patrolling the water around the airport, along with several private boats in the area.

CFB Trenton has dispatched three boats and a Hercules aircraft to assist. The Hercules has a radar system capable of picking up a distress signal.

Airport manager Bill Yule said rain and fog created "marginal" weather with visibility of less than half a kilometre.

The control centre was talking to the pilot, said Yule, when "all of a sudden everything went quiet."

The airport is located on an island in Lake Ontario close to the city's downtown core.
