I was wondering what everyone else does during the day, apart from look out of the window at the sky!!
Are there any proffesions that the airlines prefer to recruit from i.e Engineering, I.T.???

Don't know which professions the airlines prefer to recruit from, don't think they would really have a preference.

I'm an R&D Scientist in the aviation industry during the day.

What do you do?

I do software support. Thing is, the software is so damn good, no one ever trobles me with any problems. I spend all day on the internet. After 5 months, internet got a bit boring, but now I've discovered PPRuNe ..... entertained for years.

I am a telecomms consultant and likewise spend most of my day (when i'm in the office)on the internet, looking at PPrune.
When I have been on selection tests I got the impression most people there were either in the aviation industry or I.T. I was therefore wondering if airlines tended to pick these kind of proffesions over others?

P.S Anyone need a new Network in the office?

Army for a bit, now self employed management consultanct - as with the chaps above, I'm usually involved with IT in finance. I should not be at all surprised if many of the forthcoming replies involve IT related occupations - the money is frequently excellent and as a consultant the opportunity for extended time off is ever present (although not always welcome!) So there you have it - if you want to be an airline pilot and your parents aren't swimming in the crisp and folding, get into IT (or management consultancy but at the risk of offending everyone else, it does take years to build up a reputation).

Yours aye,

An IT student here. Seems to be loads of IT people on PPRUNE.

It would be interesting to find out whether we really have a bigger interest in aviation or whether it's just we're more used to using the net and therefore appear to be a high percentage of PPRUNE users.

So, let's get this straight:

The "wannabes" forum is populated bt IT consultants, all of whom are 'not pilots'. Why are they not? At best, this proves that IT consultants are more likely to have the will to become pilots. In the worst case scenario, it could indicate that to be an IT consultant is to forever condemn oneself to languishing in the region of recirculating flow that is the "Wannabes Forum" http://www.pprune.org/ubb/NonCGI/frown.gif

If we go next door and ask the pilots what they used to be, will they all say "IT consultants"? Who knows? I would be interested to find out.

(No offence to IT consultants, of course: You've all done really well for yourselves already :))

Self-employed researcher/writer; so plenty of freedom and spare time to go on PPRuNe, study, fly, whatever.

The people I know through PPRuNe are all in IT, or computer literate at the very least. Other pilots I meet, PPLs or professionals, frequently don't even have computers, and many haven't even heard of PPRuNe!!! http://www.pprune.org/ubb/NonCGI/frown.gif

Conclusion - people who have computer access and are into aviation read PPRuNe; those who work in IT have access more often and read it and post more often. I really wouldn't deduce any more into it than that.

I am also exceptionally bored. Work is so quiet (good thing if you work in support), I spend about 7 hours a day on the net, 1/2 that on PPRuNe. Sounds sad, I know but, I get paid IT Software rates for it .. which paid for the gliding .. then the ppl .. then the hours .. and about to pay for the ATPL written's. One day I'll escape from here. Yep, I too was in IT, indeed I still am.....

There's a thread (now running in the Computers & Internet Issues forum) w.r.t IT Contracting in which I posted the following comments:

Just like flying, you should endeavour to maintain your IT/systems skills in tip top condition - i.e. should be you ever lose your license (e.g. stuff up a medical) you can always go back to this much-in-demand job.

Just like many other business's, airlines too are desperately short on solid IT skills and imho this is a good selling point on your CV. Indeed, and almost as proof, yours truly is due to become the IT/Systems Manager at British World Airlines, whilst also flying the B737 for them from LGW, i.e. veritably the best of both worlds !

I'll stand 100% by those comments, in that I've had and will continue to earn a good living from IT, e.g. across a period of nearly 20 years, I've NEVER been unemployed.

That said, and IMHO, its more than likely that those IT folks with a passion to fly would tend to be able to locate / read / contribute to PPRuNe (i.e. that's just what I did) , simply by the nature of themselves and their jobs - but I must also make a point of saying that there are also a serious number of 'knob-heads' in IT whom I personally wouldn't let lose on a bicycle never mind a jet aircraft !

( Yeah, and don’t we all know it's the same in all professions )

Now for those less familiar with the aviation business, you would not believe just how many pilots come from, and continue to pursue, other careers.

To be honest, (and outside of the comments made in the quoted section above) the possession of IT skills are about as much use to the piloting of an airliner as an ashtray on a motorbike ! ...... and imho what matters (outside of passing the tests for the license) is attention to detail, ability to work weird hours, and character.

(This mainly for the older Wannabes amongst us) I was 38 years old when Hamrah ( whom until the day of my final interview with him, I had never met previously ) gave me the opportunity of a lifetime at Go Fly - i.e. I left IT (sort of) and went straight to the RHS of a B737 - and yes, it was a steep learning curve, but it's not 'rocket science' - now go figure just how was it that, back then, a 38 year old bloke with a not particularly impressive aviation orientated CV was able to do this ?!
An airline knows what it can give you (i.e. a job, a type-rating, training, etc) but what is it that YOU bring to them, e.g. to be brutal about it, blokes with just a nice straight-forward frozen ATPL are two-a-penny, i.e. you would simply not believe the number of CV's airlines get from wannabe pilots - so, just what criteria would you use in order to select one wannabe over another ?!

Finally……. never, ever, give up !!! (e.g. I too came close, but have Danny / Capt.P to thank for similarly reminding me of this )

Ps. I hope to see many of you Wannabes at the PPRuNe Pilot Seminar.

Oddly enough ... IT! Who'd a thunkit?

After High School ... four years in the Army, six years in manufacturing engineering and management, and now going on four years in IT (QA and Customer Service Manager with some programming, still).

My PPL instructor was a former VB/Access programmer and my Instrument/Comm instructor was in web development. Alot of IT folks in aviation. Could be - as some have written - that we are more likely to find PPrune and be more internet savvy, but in addition maybe the technical/fiddler type is attracted to the technical aspects of aviation combined with the shear FUN of it. I dunno? What I DO know is that I wanna get outa the cube and into the right-hand seat of a CRJ or a Jungle Jet. SOON!

First of all......sorry if I say anything that's already been said......lazy git I haven't read the whole thread.

There is a long tradition of IT professionals on PPRuNe - partly because they may have more time to access the internet at work, but also because it is a job that pays well and therefore pays for flying. I am also from an IT background and I went in with the express intention of paying for flying training. I'm not working in IT at the moment however and indeed my flying ambitions have been on hold for some time due to medical problems http://www.pprune.org/ubb/NonCGI/frown.gif

I don't think there is any real link between having IT skills and flying skills and I don't think airlines are going to look more favourably on you because you are good with computers, but at the same time it is a technical subject and as we all know computers are ever more prominent in the modern commercial airliner. Still when I have worked in IT there have been many spare hours that have been spent reading PPRuNe!

I have read once or twice on here of pilots who did suggest they would rather be in IT, but they were obviously seriously disillusioned with their present job. I also know one chap who is a 777 SFO who did a course in computing recently.......but he still loves flying and is not about to go and work in an office.......you can of course earn much more money as an IT contractor than as a pilot if you have the right skill set.....ie SAP/Oracle etc.....but hey, none of us are doing IT for the money itself, but rather the career that it can lead to.

Of course Capt PPRuNe himself came from an IT background originally, and that is how this site came into existence in the first place. I remember about three years ago when there were just five forums on this site and sometimes only a couple of topics (or less) in Wannabes! We have come a long way since then.......this is still the best website in the world so keep it up Capt PPRuNe et al!

Insurance consultant involved with the internet sales side of the firm.
I was a musician, still am I suppose albeit in an extreme part-time capacity. Got a "proper job" due to insecurity ie; "where's my next meal coming from?" and to save money for flying lessons.

You could say I've been through a bit of a career change of late.

Hope to start an integrated course for CPL soon.

Seeing as there are so many IT people here, often with fast internet connections, shall we setup a emailing list for video clips and pictures, that we can't put up at PPRuNe??

I've got some great video clips on email :) :)

These video clips won't result in me becoming a full time wannabe will they as all manner of lewd activities appear on my screen?

Didn't you work for a large Porn company doing I.T. You should have some interesting clips then!

Used to do IT support in the porn industry. Sadly, no video clips from then. Just the usual silly video's that IT people with quick connections send to each other.

Got a good one today, a fatal mid-air collision between a bird, and a baseball, that had just been thrown. Excellent feathers explosion, wreckage strewn over a wide area.

ickle :) (mail me if you want it sending 1.4mb)

Yeah I saw the bird strike one. Didn't realise there were so many feathers on a bird!

If you look on FHM there are a couple of disturbing video clips.
Not that I am bored at work or anything!

Another one from the IT industry, though this time just to add a little aviation spice - from good old NATS and their Air Traffic Control systems, Did you all know that the new kit down at Swanwick which goes live in January is upgrading from coal-fired to gas !

At the private strip where I base my aircraft there are some 22 other pilots / owners. Of these none, 0 , zero etc are "IT Consultants" .

I know that all the pilots are PPLs and so might not be fully representative of pprune wanabees . Incidently almost 3/4 of the pilots are self employed / business owners.

I work for a Private Bank here in the states buying aircraft to lease to clients. Interesting job, I learn about all kinds of different aircraft. Never thought i would be doing this. Oh and also i make a lot of good contacts, so when that big day comes that i leave this job, and fly aircraft...full time. Maybe be someday... ;)

Low n' Slow, sorry, I'm not ignoring you! I am studying A-Level Physics and Geography and AS_Level Maths and Environmental Science. Got my final exams soon....eeeeeeeek! http://www.pprune.org/ubb/NonCGI/eek.gif

I will be thrown into the big world of work this summer, but I haven't decided what I'm going to do yet....hmmmmm. (Obviously I am a wannabe pilot!) but I am thinking of the time between end of college and when BA say "wow! you're great! Come and work for us!" Or simply to fund my own training...sadly, I feel it may be this option!! ;) Anyone got any ideas as to which line of employment I should follow?! Let me know if you do! Or, even better, does anyone here want to give me a (good) job?! :)

Thanks,

LFG

Not quite IT but work for Big Blue for a few years now, surprise surprise, formerly quite a few years in the Aircraft maintenance business and an airline, desperate to get back, working on the Flight Instructor rating, have a CPL etc, sometimes a film extra.
Full time wannabee.

It's true having access to PC's all day means there is a high proportion of us computer heads logging on.
This thing I'm using is supposed to be testing really expensive RAM chips. This is more fun.
