Question....

1) ABC123 turn right heading 230 "radar vectors" descend to 3000ft

2) ABC123 "route direct" to AB VOR descend to 3000ft

Does ATC provide terrain clearance in one/ both/ or none of the above scenerios????

Thanks for the insight from any region of the world.

In both scenarios, for the UK anyway, ATC will provide terrain separation unless you elect to continue VMC and are visual with the surface.

In U.S. if you are getting ATC services like both of these you will be clear of terrain/towers/cranes/etc (that's what the MOCA is)

It's when the controller says "...radar service terminated have a good day." that you are on your own.

As far as i'm aware under Eurocontrol "laws" in the first case the controller is responsible for ground clearance as the aircraft is on a radar heading. When ever the pilot is given "own navigation to a point" he is now responsible. Hope this helps.

Yeah, I thought myself that when you are radar identified....whether a direct route or radar vectors, ATC provides terrrain clearance altitudes.
