I flew over Athens old airport some days ago. It seems that half of the runway has been removed and there are still lots of airplanes down there. Mostly small ones but at least one seemed to be really big (747?). Anyone knows anything about these airplanes? Is the airport still open?

When I was there just before closure to commercial traffic there was an Olympic 747 parked near the hangars with quite a few vital parts missing. It was clearly not going to be flown out and this is probably the one you saw.

Olympic were keeping their maintanence at the old airport until their new hangar was finished at the new place.

According to Airliner World mag, all the stored Olympic a/c are being broken up, but the 747 is rumoured to be destined to become a conference centre!

This (http://www.airliners.net/open.file/313445/L/) is probably the a/c you saw - the photo was taken this January.

One assumes this 747 is awaiting the same fate as the 727's which had been rotting there for several years. If you get sentimental about these old aircraft DO NOT follow this (http://www.airliners.net/open.file/317057/L/) link either.

Last time I was there, there were, I think, a couple of military DC-3 on the North side of the field on what used to be the cross runway. Anyone know if they met the same fate? (Edit: Actually, just realised, you can see one of them behind the tail of SX-CBB in the link above.

Is enyone else as sceptical as me about the old airport being turned into parkland for the people?
