Folks,

I am an ex-NATS engineer- a couple of years ago. At the time the evangelists in NATS & Eurocontrol were boring us senseless with the ATN (Aeronautical Telecommunications Network) and how it was going the change everything- CPDLC (Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications blah blah blah). Well, they swore blind that we would be putting good old VHF analogue voice communications in cardboard boxes and chucking them in the attic.

As far as I know (correct me if I'm wrong) the promised revolution has not taken place, and the luddites still insist on using VHF amplitude modulation, rather than the wonders of the OSI model. Is this so? What's the latest with this wonderful vision that no airline wanted, and that was so functionally rich it would never work?

And in the meantime the internet keeps growing, using robust, cheap and tried-and-tested network technology which- shock horror- can also deliver to mobiles.....

Any updates much appreciated!!
