BA747 emegency landing @ Riga Sunday 20/4/03?

There are few articles around about BA 747 emergency landing in RIX/Riga enroute from Calcutta to London due to smoke in cockpit last Sunday, 307 pax evacuated / no injuries. Any info on that?

Quite correct CargoOne. It was the BA146 DEL LHR that made an unscheduled stop at RIX, smoke in the flight deck from the door lock solenoid of all things. A relief aircraft was on it's way almost before it was down.

Thats the 2nd case of this which i have heard about in the last few days. The other case was a B777 inbound to India. (Not BA)

Am I missing the point here. Why not just replace the solenoid? A relief aircraft seems a very expensive option.

Safety first ZFT. How do you know its just the solenoid? What caused it to fail, wiring probs that might affect somehing else? Who was it said 'if you think safety is expensive, try having a crash'?

Couldn't agree more. Solenoids don't just start smoking 'cos they're bored or want to look like James Dean. Either it's got an internal short of some kind, or too many volts for too long have been applied. Either way, you wouldn't just replace it and carry on - it'd be like replacing a fuse in your house mains distribution without checking why it had failed.

Given the choice of going ahead with a flight where something had improperly combusted but the cause was not fully explored, or waiting for a replacement a/c, I know which one I'd go for...

I doubt that BA keep any 747-400 door solenoids in their spares inventory at Riga.
