I've got a valid PPL at the moment (I've had it about 5yrs, since pre-JAR days). I want to get an NPPL so I went to my GP who examined me and signed the medical form (group2 - equiv to HGV). If your PPL is lapsed, you need to take a test like a GFT to get the NPPL. As my PPL is currently valid, do I also need to take this test? Anyone been down this road and can help me? Cheers.

I may be missing a trick, but why would you want to downgrade your licence to a NPPL ?

Medical reasons? There are many whose flying activities hung on a knife-edge until the NPPL was established.

macintosh,
as your licence and medical are both current it's simply a case of filling in a form and coughing up the fee.
For more info check out Official NPPL site (http://www.nppl.uk.com/) or AOPA (http://www.aopa.co.uk/newsfromaopa/npplintro.html) .

and note the form is fairly general purpose - if just applying on the basis of a current JAA licence and SEP rating, you don't need to supply all those totals of hours, test certs, etc (sections 4 to 7) BUT don't miss the signature from your local club/school CFI who has inspected your paperwork - section 8
Plenty of JAR PPLs over 50 are swapping over to avoid the yearly JAR medical costs if the NPPL fits their flying habits anyway.
