Is it possible to engage either the VS or IAS speed mode without engaging ALT SEL first?

Yes it is.

It is one of the characteristics of the Classics than can catch you out.

You can engage V/S or IAS modes on the MSP without selecting ALT SEL, which means that the aircraft will continue to climb or descend and will not level off at the next cleared altitude.

Totally agree, and the ALT SEL can also sometimes drop out at the point of altitude capture, and just continue on!

Hi again,
just another thought, FFRATS, of course, (full flight regime auto throttle system), isn't directly connected to any mode of the ALT SEL (or ALT HOLD) system, they operate quite seperately of each other!
I'm assuming, of course, that you don't have an FMS equipped aircraft, in which case, it is controlled thru the FMS, but then again, you would have 'FMS' selected on the MSP and neither ALT SEL or ALT HOLD would actually remain selected, visually.

I just keep on thinkin',
Cheers
