78% of Former Australian Ansett Staff Employed: Survey

MELBOURNE, Dec 17 Asia Pulse - About 78 per cent of former Ansett employees have been employed since the airline collapsed, according to a new survey.
The study commissioned by the Victorian government polled 649 of the 12,500 Ansett employees who were retrenched between September 2001 and July 2002.

About 78 per cent of the respondents had found some work by the time the survey was conducted in August.

Of those, 26 per cent had found a new job before finishing at Ansett, nearly half had found employment within a month and 75 per cent within two months.

About eight per cent left the labour force and were no longer looking for work.

Almost a third had started some form of training or studies.

Half of those surveyed said they had had more than one job since being retrenched, with the first job generally paying less than their role at Ansett.

Victoria was the hardest hit by the retrenchments, accounting for approximately 40 per cent of the total number of jobs losses.

The Melbourne suburbs of Sunbury, Tullamarine, Taylors Lakes and Essendon were the five most affected localities nationally.

Victorian Treasurer John Brumby said the results would help improve assistance programs for retrenched workers in all industries.

"This survey following the biggest retrenchment in Australia's history will help Victorian and other governments improve services provided to retrenched workers," he said.

Mr Brumby said the government would commission a follow-up study in 18 months time to gauge the workers' success in finding secure employment.

The study was undertaken by Professor Michael Webber of the University of Melbourne and Sally Weller of the Centre for Strategic Economic Studies at Victoria University.

649 polled out of 12500? Come on.

Does anyone have any realistic figures, especially amongst the pilot body?

Got a feeling it's unfortunately nowhere near 78%!

78% Employed !!! Yes, but as what ??
Casual...Part Time...Contract.... most in jobs that are nothing more than 'something for the moment, at least it puts bread on the table'
The whole report is flawed, less than 700 interviewed out of 12600, and only interviewed in Vic... Come On !!!!

Ahh yes, the wonderful Victorian State Government, always putting a spin on everything just to make themselves look good.

Need something to look good? Just ask Premier Hymie! Rewrite history? No problems. Need serious help due to your company collapsing? FU@K OFF! NO SOUP FOR YOU!!!

649 represents 0.05192 out of the total of 12,500. And of that 0.05192, a whopping unbelievable 78pc of them gained employment! Doesnt that make the masses feel good huh!

Who was in charge of this 'survey'? Goebbels? I see also this 'survey' did not provide figures on error-sampling, so its just another cheap confidence-trick to suit the obvious purposes of Victorian government politicians who commissioned it.

Would be interesting to find out what the political payoff was to get the U. of M. and V.U. to crack this little stunt.

Unfortunately, only people who have had their lives slandered by the media :) are amongst the (very) few who REALISE that this report is b.s., and published as a "FEEL GOOD".

After all, Christmas is only XX shopping days away!!

Yes, Buster "re-writing (recent) history" is rapidly becoming part of Australia's tour-de-force - and when you look at one of the principal proponents (Victorian Treasurer John Brumby) in THIS airline debacle, and the one 13 years ago, when his brother was involved - it is probably easy to draw the conclusion that pollies want these things buried as quickly as possible.

History repeating itself, as far as "spin doctoring" by the media??
In Australia??
NEVER!! NEVER!!.NEVER..NEVER......NEVER.NEVER!
NEVER-NEVER.
NEVER NEVER.
