Hong Kong Dragonair Gets OK For Regional Routes Served By Cathay
Tuesday December 3, 9:09 pm ET
HONG KONG -(Dow Jones)- Hong Kong Dragon Airlines' application for licenses to fly to five regional destinations currently served by Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. has been approved by the government, according to the government's gazette published Friday.
The Air Transport Licensing Authority has awarded Dragonair a five-year license to offer commercial flights - for passenger, freight and mail services - on routes between Hong Kong and Seoul, Tokyo, Manila, Bangkok and Sydney.
According to the Gazette, the license will be valid between Dec. 1 and Nov. 30, 2007 and approval for an unlimited number of flights has been given to the carrier.
Dragonair is 43.29% owned by China National Aviation Co. . Red-chip CITIC Pacific Ltd. owns 29.35%, Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. has 17.79% and Cathay's parent Swire Pacific Ltd. holds 7.71%.
Its passenger network covers 28 destinations in the Asia-Pacific region, while its freighter network stretches over Europe, the Middle East, Taiwan, Japan and mainland China.
Cathay is currently applying to fly to China after a 12-year absence. Dragonair has filed a public objection to Cathay's application to fly on the lucrative routes to Beijing, Shanghai and Xiamen.
