United Buying RJ's

United announce a major restructuring yesterday, laying off 9000 more employees, leaving 74,000 still employed out of just over 100,000.

They also announced the grounding of 49 additional aircraft, fleet mix unkown, but I speculate 747-400, 767-200, and 737-500.

At the same time UAL is asking for a 1.8 Billion dollar loan guarantee from the goverment, its pilots have agreed to an 18 percent cut. Flight Attendents have agreed to lesser pay cuts as well.

With this savings, UAL is providing financing to its UA Express operation for 145 additional RJ's.

I'm about 1100 on the seniority list of 8400, soon to be 7700, 23 years seniority, 767 about to be 777 Captain, and I got this feeling I'm going to be pulling the gear lever for some 25 year old kid on an RJ within 3 years....

I read a press release from your company that quoted a Mr. Greene as saying the number of additional RJ's at the Express carriers would be increased to 109. It made no mention of UAL providing the financing. Since UAL credit is currently non-existent one would think these "Express" carriers could provide their own financing.

While I regret the difficulties your company is having, don't you think you're exaggerating more than just a bit (given your position)?

I regret ALL furloughs and particularly those that might affect the rEAL pilots currently at UAL. Devastating to lose again after that debacle.

Mr. Greene is gone, replaced by Mr. Tilton a few months ago.


Announcement was made on the same day voting closed one the Economic Recovery Plan (ERPII) by the pilots.

ERP II provides for 133 RJ's in 2002, 224 in 2003, and 243 2004-2007.

I don't think the my own prospects are very good, but this is my feeling based on my experience.

The choice is, as I see it, to jump ship now or sink later.

In the 90's, I had one 727 crew where the Engineer used to be a EAL Captain and my First Officer used to be an EAL F/O and they had flown together a few times at Eastern...

True gentlemen they where, no one upsmanship by either of them towards the other.
