Heard a Qantas 737 asking Melbourne Centre today for a diversion into Alice Springs. Anyone know the reason for the diversion?

Hot tip is to pick up pax stranded due to a 'busted bird'.

happens quite regularly on syd-drw and mel-drw services in wet due to wx at drw, and the requirmenet for a stopover in alice to pick up some more motion lotion...

This may have been the diversion of the non-stop QF800 CS/DN flight to AS on the weekend due the two broken Smurfjets and quite a few stranded pax. Instead of arriving into DN in 2300-ish it arrived at 0300.

Wonder if the crew got a bit more than cheese & bikkies during the 6 hour flight?

If that was QF781; it had a tail strike at Ayers Rock on departure to Sydney. Called into YBAS for engineers inspection. Interesting to note that it got back here (Sydney) just about on time, despite the diverstion, the holding at Alice Springs and the half hour on the ground up there.
