My dad is a regular pax on Delta, and he has now twice witnessed the 'last flight' of a captain. My dad tells me, after landing, a firetruck drives up and sprays the aircraft with water while it taxies to the gate. I believe this happened on flight MUC-ATL both times.

Anyhow, whats the story behind it?

thanks ;)

It is a means of saying, 'farewell' or 'welcome' - fireboats in harbour will also do it as a means of welcome home for a ship on its last voyage or soldiers and sailors home from the wars.

It is just to let people know they haven't gone un-noticed.
