Occasionaly when looking at pixs of aircraft in flight there is often an wire appearing as though it is hanging off the aircraft. What is this

i have seen many examples on Bea 146 in fligh, and also on airbuses during flight testing. Is it perhaps just for the testing phase??

Thanx:D

Not sure what you could mean. Can you point us to a few examples?

I found this on a search at airliners.net:

Is that the wire you are talking about (the one from the vert.stab?)
If so, then this discussion would be of interest then:

The person who replied said as follows:
It is called a trailing cone. It collects pressure data in the "free stream" near the aircraft during flight. It is used to calibrate the various systems during the flight test program.
