Does anybody know the validity period of the ground school part of an aircraft type rating?

I attended a TRTO course 5 months ago, completed the Aircraft Ground School, CRM, Fire and Wet drills etc but no flying has taken place.

When I did my first JAA type rating one year ago, they told me I had 6 months to complete the flying part, starting from the day of the groundschool test.

Slightly off question [but not general topic], is it still possible under JAR rules, to self-study type technical ground material [using own manuals, etc] and then sit the type ground exam [under CAA it was called an ARB exam] at CAA/LGW?

CB.

As I understand things it is only possible to do the ground school now at a Type Rating Training Organisation [TRTO] and then sit the examination 'in house'. The ARB has gone forever.

Thanks AYR, just as I thought.
