Birmingham Airport has temporarily suspended flights due to a security incident on a plane.

The airport had an emergency call from a plane and the situation was "very serious", according to a passenger on another plane at the airport.

Belfast City Airport told the BBC the flight involved was due to land in Belfast.

A Birmingham Airport spokesperson said: "The aircraft landed safely and all passengers and crew have disembarked.

"All customers due to travel should make their way to the airport and check in as normal."

Several flights at the airport have been delayed by more than two hours, according to departure updates on the airport's website.

Train services were also at a standstill at Birmingham International railway station.

The BBC has contacted West Midlands Police for a response.

It’s great that a passenger on another plane can assess the situation as ‘very serious’ from that distance :-)

'The incident is now being dealt as a false call with very good intent and the item is not suspicious'.
