Having been out of the country for the last week or so I may have missed this, (no luck with pprune search), but...

According to the News of The Screws - a quality paper I know! - Sussex Police helicopter was buzzed by a UFO which then out ran them at high speed. Complete with a still picture of the FLIR image and the observer, (one of the original and well respected observers if my memory is right).

Apparently this happened sometime last week but it has only just come to light!

Any more info anyone? True or a late/early April Fool?

Being a UFO freak I watched the clips with great interest. Unfortunately, I think I can explain them as nothing too exciting.. My son bought me a home-brew hot air balloon... a huge thing made of tissue paper which is launched by suspending a night light in the bottom. The clips looked to me exactly like such a device, even to the extent that you could see the flames flickering inside.

Assumed there probably was a rational explantion as that was the only news coverage I saw...

UFOs SIGHTED OVER LOUGH NEAGH IN ULSTER
At 11 p.m. on Wednesday, August 15, 1999, telephones at the Armagh Planetarium and police stations in Northern Ireland, as residents reported UFOs and strange phenomena over nearby Lough (Lake) Neagh. According to Miles Johnston, the flap continued for five straight days, ending on Monday, August 22, 1999 at 4 a.m. Each UFO overflight began at 11 p.m. each night and ended at 4 o'clock the following morning. "Sightings included large rings of light, with inner rings, over a several-hundred-square- mile area," plus "groups of flying discs flying in formation." Witnesses also reported seeing "a U.S. Air Force AWACS plane accompanied by two red triangular aircraft," Johnston added, "They flew over Northern Ireland at only 4,000 feet." Strangest of all were the reports of "rays of black light" streaming down from the night sky and "some illuminations identical to the Aurora Borealis but due south" of Lough Neagh. Armagh is 42 miles (70 kilometers) southwest of Belfast. (Many thanks to Miles Johnston for this report.)

saw this in a ufo web site....as someone with more than a passing interest in things ATC at Belfast I was surprised that none of my colleagues had even heard of it!

AWACS WITH TWO RED TRIANGULAR AIRCRAFT AT 4000 FEET even the spotters seemed to miss those!!
RAYS OF BLACK LIGHT   FROM A NIGHT SKY:confused:  more Guiness vicar?

To those taking the Mickey.... believe me, guys, when you get seriously involved in one of these things you'll laugh on the other sides of your faces..

Well said, HD. From personal experience I recognise that there is a potentially high 'WTF' factor in such things. Stuck here at FL3.9 my opinions will count for little, but I'm intrigued by an ATC who is prepared to describe himself as a 'UFO freak'... goes with the job, I suppose ;)

Cheers,

m.

I saw the same article about the UFO over Brighton - allthough the incident happend almost a year ago according to the papers.

How ever I must confess that it was Me. I was just trying out my new Intergalactic Super Cruiser with built in spinny thing and extra flashing lights. With go faster stripes.

Just for your info, Harriers are not based at leuchars. And yes I totally agree that those from Burnley are inbread mutants!

Don't know if anyone remembers the UFO sightings over Phoenix AZ about 6 years ago. They showed 5 lights in a V formation. Well that was me:D
I was in a five-ship flying in formation at night from LAS to Davis-Mothan AFB.
I have to say everytime I see it on Discovery channel I burst out laughing.
