Is it true in the US that air traffic controllers get hired get one of two tracks, either an en-route or a terminal? If someone was hired into a center controller position would they never get the opportunity to work approach control or a tower?

Wiggums,

Normally you are hired into either the enroute or terminal options, but you can transfer from one option to the other.

For example I started out at ZID (Indianapolis Center), and I'm currently at FWA (Fort Wayne Intl. ATCT), a combined approach control and tower, and before FWA I worked at TVC (Traverse City ATCT) a VFR tower. I'll probably be transfering to ZTL (Atlanta Center) this fall or next summer to finish out my carreer.
