View Full Version : EASA CAT II - New Commander limits

I have a bit of an odd question I'm trying to figure out.

An old company of mine required a new commander to conform to slightly more restrictive CAT II minima than that of an experienced commander of the same type. In other words, the new Commander had to apply x amount of extra height to the CAT II DH minima and also add x amount to CAT II Visibility minima. This was the rule until 100 hours PIC on type were achieved.

Does anyone know for certain if that is an EASA requirement or just an in-house requirement as an added extra safety measure?

Almost certainly an in-house Company requirement. Years ago, when I was a new Captain on type, destination weather was below my newbie limits. Miraculously a Data link message from Flight Ops appeared on the printer upgrading my limits to those of an experienced Captain. Guess what, we landed OK (and safely, in accordance with National Regs).

Haha, funny how it's a universal thing amongst Flight Ops. wanting to change in-house requirements last minute when it suits them. I guess, in this case, it worked out well for you too.

Thanks that was exactly my thoughts about it as well. I'm asking simply because as a newbie commander in a different company, that rule does not seem to be mentioned in my new company Ops. Manual.

Might be to comply with AMC1 SPA.LVO.120:

Before commencing CAT II operations, the following additional provisions should be applicable to pilots-in-command/commanders, or pilots to whom conduct of the flight may be delegated, who are new to the aircraft type or class:
(i) 50 hours or 20 sectors on the type, including LIFUS; and
(ii) 100 m should be added to the applicable CAT II RVR minima when the operation requires a CAT II manual landing or use of HUDLS to touchdown until:(A) a total of 100 hours or 40 sectors, including LIFUS, has been achieved on the type; or(B) a total of 50 hours or 20 sectors, including LIFUS, has been achieved on the type where the flight crew member has been previously qualified for CAT II manual landing operations with an EU operator;
