I am getting confused by EASA's wording in FCL.905.CRI(b)(1).

Does it mean that if I do the assessment of competence on a Seneca and I were to instruct also on a DA42 I would need 15 hours PIC on the DA42? Or is it 15 hours on any MEP in the preceding 12 months?

EASA made this too complicated:rolleyes:

Does it mean that if I do the assessment of competence on a Seneca and I were to instruct also on a DA42 I would need 15 hours PIC on the DA42? No, because they are both in the same Class. You will however require differences training, because they are different variants within the same class.

Alright, good to know. Considering the 30 hours PIC requirement on MEP aircraft, I would not have been surprised if that had been the case as well.

Unfortunately some authorities have interpreted this as yes, you do.

At one place I had to do a full 10 hours SE standards and they wanted me to do the 15 hours ME on a Tecnam as well. I had a rather heated discussion with the CFI as to the definitions where he stated that’s what their NAA had stated was required so their HOT had written the manuals to accommodate.

Silly, but hey ho!

I won't teach on more than one MEP type in the foreseeable future but yes, thanks for this mess EASA.

Did you have to self fund those 15 hours?

The ATO that I´m doing my FI course at are bonding one of the experienced instructors for a 2 or 3 year period for his 20+ hours of MEP PIC time. I´m unaware of other requirements, other than the bond. The normal rate for the MEP aircraft is apparently around 500 euros/hour (wet).

If they had asked, I would have told them where they could go earlier than I did.

I had an hour in the Tecnam prior to arrival on site but significant instruction in “traditional” twins and plenty much “Glass” experience so, from my point of view, a few hours single famil and the rest of the standards sign-off in the “unfamiliar” type would have made more sense, been quicker and if relevant, cheaper.

It’s a difficult situation as you want to ensure your instructors are well trained and standardised (and cost to you as an ATO shouldn’t be a consideration) but you need some level of commitment and “return on your investment”.

If they’re bonding for the 30 P1 hours then I suppose that’s fair enough, but for the CRI ME course and/or standards that doesn’t sit comfortably with me.
