Is it Christchurch - New Zealand?

ea200

It might be the 1963 royal tour which fits with the V-Jet in the background. If so, I would take a wild guess at Coolangatta based on the terrain.

siftydog
23rd May 2021, 08:24
O Ops nails it first up with Christchurch. The VIP RAAF V700 was the decoy (not particularly effective in this case). The photo was post 1963 Royal tour; The VJets didn't come to Christchurch until 1965 IIRC although this was taken in 1966.

Thanks siftydog it was a bit of a fluke. I couldn't see too many eucalyptus trees so I thought I would widen the search a bit to within sort of Viscount range. Later did a bit of digging and think your snap probably shows Viscount A6-435 which was at Christchurch on 8th February 1967 collecting the Australian Prime Minister.

Here is one to go on with. I'll put another clue on this evening.

RAF Graveley?

OUAQUKGF Ops
24th May 2021, 14:24
Sorry for the delay chevvron we had to leave the wilds of north-east Norfolk this morning in a futile quest for a replacement motor car. ( My wife suggested a Hearse rather than an old-people carrier.) I'm afraid it isn't Gravely but perhaps I'll do that next and then you can tell me why. I'm loathe to put up another visual clue just yet, however Folks can have a look at the first image, just below the windshield. That should give an indication of aircraft type - I've put a couple of hints on the image of the Night Jar too which should move us all on a bit............?

Windshield looks like a Viscount and there's a 'line' in the grass to the left of the runway which led me to suggest Graveley.

chevvron if your answer about Gravely was to include 692 Squadron all I can say is that you were certainly in one respect working along the right lines.

I see our posts have crossed. I fear it is not a Viscount. Keep chipping away !

Sorry Sifty - it is not RAF Spanhoe . This was an RAF Aerodrome but there were no Transport Squadrons stationed there until the end of The War. I will leave it at that for the moment. Perhaps The Night Shift can make a connection? Incidentally the first and the above image were taken in July 1944.

Looks like a Hudson.
The reason I suggested Gravely was because I identified the line to the left of the runway as possbly being FIDO and the taxiway pattern was similar to Gravely.

Sorry, not EMA,LHR or even Canada.
Regulars of the previous "Which Aerodrome Mk III"may recall a recent challenge to find an airfield with a former motor racing track. This place shares that feature, albeit briefly. Going back a few more years from the original photo:

Max Tow
26th May 2021, 12:42
Munich Riem it is, despite the deliberate mis-steer of using Pan Am rather than LH images!

The Herald in the first photo was correctly spotted as op by Bavaria.

Part of the Riem perimeter was used for motor cycle and F2 car racing between 1949 and 1951. The Pan Am Connie was on its first visit to the airport in 1950 after post-war repairs. The Comet was United Arab SU-ALE after an overrun in Feb 1970 and the SAS Caravelle was bringing Wernher von Braun on a visit back home in 1960. The Lockheed Electra was of course G-AEPR arriving with Neville Chamberlain in Sep 1938.

The Junkers G.38 was an interesting beast - only 2 built and used by Lufthansa through the 30s. The second one, D2500/D-APIS, shown at Munich, carried 34 passengers including 6 in the wing roots - by all accounts, a very noisy and uncomfortable place to be. This particular aircraft was apparently destroyed in Athens by RAF bombers in 1941. The Japanese built 6 more as the Mitsubishi Ki-20 bomber.

Riem has long since closed but the iconic tall red tower survives in the exhibition grounds together with a token strip of runway.

You're correct

Catterick (from a VGS glider) circa 1985.

Here are a couple of other photos.

Note the VGS gliding caravan at the threshold adjacent to the Hastings.

The fuselage behind the Hastings is Buccaneer then (obviously) a Vulcan and beside that (if i recall) the remains of a much scorched Javelin and another Vulcan.

Asturias has it with Goma. The original picture shows the 2002 lava flow which shortened the runway and inundated the taxiway, cutting off the terminal from the runway!

The recent lava flow came from the same vent system on the southern flanks of Mount Nyiragongo. It didn't reach the airport this time, but it did destroy hundreds of houses.

Hello Threaders

Short intermezzo,

With the start of Mk IV. I was reminded of the Index Excel sheet nvubu has been managing.
Has anybody email contact with nvubu?
I send him a PM but nvubu has not replied nor been on the thread for a week.
I hope he is well.

Anyway,
I started updating the index and like nvubu has said earlier:
It is quite laborious work.
I have now back tracked 2021 (47 challenges up to 16-05)
and I have done May 2019 (just alone 57 challenges, with as excess 11 May with 5 challenges)

I think indeed the pace is more balanced nowadays.

If any one would like to help:
please start from 1st Jan 2020 and give me a PM.

Bitter sweet? another sort of Orange = Tangerine? Bitter because the Spanish and Moroccans are having another spat over the old Spanish Sahara?

Thus perhaps its Tangiers?

OK - there appears to be some Japanese graffiti on the concrete block behind the aircraft top left - so maybe Satsuma - but that's in land and there isn't an airfield within many miles. Another classic Japanese orange is the Mandarin produced largely in Wakayama prefecture. Doesn't look like Kobe or Kansai so it might be Tokushima Awaodori?

As I have the latest update of the database I have a small advantage on the other contestants.
I will therefore not post my answer (yet)
I can confirm this country is not in the database.
For that sake everybody can also use the list of W-A mk3.

Looks like you and I have the same idea:
Post challenges of countries not yet featured before.
(See Vatican City)
In Europe we still have 3 or 4 left.

I am working on getting the updated list posted but for the moment this only seems feasible via a link to a URL (cloud server). I am not aware I have such cloud server. If somebody knows how or is willing to do for me then please send PM.

Sorry Old Boy I took it for granted that you would search in Norway for the WW11 Memorial. So please do......... With regards to The EU we are talking about the present as it did not exist (indeed it was just the opposite) in the period concerned. We are looking for what is now a derelict aerodrome.

Reminds me of a BoB Open day at RAF Waterbeach in 1951, to which I cycled from Cambridge as a 10-year old because I loved aeroplanes; unfortunately the Meteor 4-ship aerobatic display team had a collision during a team roll, with fatal consequences. It was my first, but not last, lesson that aircraft will bite. Those 4 don't look like Meteors, though, so it's a long shot.

The Google Earth image looks like it, but we'll have to wait for Asturianu to confirm of course. I did consider Melilla and Ceuta (that just has a heliport apparently) but the A330 put me off - that must have been right on limits if it is indeed Melilla (1433m of runway according to Wiki)?

I'll have a shot at another place I'd love to visit, Chatham Island. Wikipedia tells me that the airfield is next to a lagoon, and that the RNZAF once had Sunderlands based there...

Lauriebe gets it with Onerahi, Whangarei. SLB has the back story. NZ4114 was struck off charge in Feb 1967; the venerable Sunderlands haven been replaced with the thoroughly modern Lockheed P3 onions.

None of the historic airfield is on this photograph; this is the memorial associated with it. The actual airfield site was more or less directly behind me when I took the pic. Not entirely sure how far behind - I'm not local to this locality...

Sutton Bridge. OH if correct. River Nene? Name of a jet engine.

Apologies for the delay in responding.
Yes indeed, it is RAF Sutton Bridge, a former training base next to the River Nene in Lincolnshire, UK. I didn't actually know there had been an airfield there - I just stopped to take a photo of the Crosskeys Bridge while driving back from Norfolk in May, and came across the memorial next to the road. I nearly ended up in the Nene, the grass on that embankment gets very slippy when it's been raining.

Not Hokie (as the local folk would have it) Lauriebe.

Definitely time for a clue: The runway is / was too short to permit Viscount services, and at a nearby art gallery one keeps thinking of Wuthering Heights (and getting sloshed on Pinot Noir of course - this is NZ!).

lauriebe
19th Jul 2021, 08:59
Could it be Nelson Airport? Quite a short runway there.

It also seems to be in a pinot noir area and, after looking around the interweb, there is a Bronte Gallery nearby.

Forgot to add OH if correct.

NZNS Nelson it is. Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson and 1st Duke of Bronte.

The apron and terminal have been substantially reconfigured since this photo was taken in 1970. I'm not sure if the attractive white park bench on the left of the shot was the business lounge or not...

OH declared.

Sadly this runway is no longer used for aircraft but great food stalls nearby and it had an important role in the past.

Ross Smith Drive in Parap, Darwin.
Was the original runway in Darwin before the current airfield was constructed.
There is a windsock in a little park at the South East end.
OH as I cant get at any of my pics at present.

It’s Ross Smith Avenue, rather than Drive. But you’re right with all the rest. Probably the only aerodrome I had a chance of identifying.

The old Qantas hangar is still in position but used as a motor museum.

And here is a picture of the good old days..

Many years ago I was walking to the Parap Markets for breakfast (a known hangover cure in those days) by a (then) young friend with whom I had imbibed the evening before. As we walked along the road I looked up and saw the old hanger and realised we were walking along an old runway.. One of many fond memories of Darwin from the 1980's.

CC has it and has declared Open House.
