Sorry Shackman the strip was not in Shropshire. It was in the Home Counties. Here is a clue that holds the name of the airstrip.............

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune.org-vbulletin/563x428/screenshot_2023_09_20_at_14_40_24_assorted_oriental_lace_jos hitex_b75c841a8fae8b505db9fd30e1c9047acca2e0be.png

And here is another clue which should, I hope, wrap things up.

The Gentleman sitting at the desk regularly flew in the Stinson Reliant from the strip.

I've looked all the way from N**h*** northwards to L**** G**** and I can't find the grass strip but I was told he actually used the straight bit of road outside the main 'bunker' site; there were a couple of short pieces of (paved) road just outside the main gate up until about 1980 (there had been a helipad established on the sports field long before this of course) where the aircraft could be parked; I observed them many times when I visited in my capacity as a member of a Royal Observer Corps 'Special Duties' team.
Later in life, my ATC squadron was 'parented' by the station for things like uniforms and other equipment so I visited many more times.
Now I've gone and revealed both his name and the name of his HQ.
Time 0708: I just searched google instead of Bing and the grass strip/cricket field IS there.

The generic name would be 'RAF High Wycombe' but this is spread out over several sites near Naphill with the actual grass airstrip being at Lacey Green which is about a mile north of the main 'bunker' site.

I'd better add 'Open House!

'New Road' was built by the RAF and was also used for light aircraft as it passed right outside the main gate of the 'bunker' site; parking 'spur's' leading off the main road either side of the gate were provided to park the aircraft. These short 'spurs' had 'No Entry' signs at both ends which was why we asked about them.

There was more than one airfield 'just south ' of the castle, one being to the south west at Foliejon Park (used by the King of Norway and his government in exile during WW2) and another at Smith's Lawn at the southern end of the Great Park used for the assembly and test flying of Wellingtons and Warwicks and by Prince Philip while he was learning to fly in the '50s.

Not Sardinia, no. The name by which this airfield, and locality, is known in English is actually the Italian name for it, although it has a different name in the native language. It has been ruled by Italy, and constituent parts of it, at various periods of its history, but it isn't now.

On the Mediterranean. (By that, I mean the lump of water that stretches from Lebanon to Gibraltar - I'm never quite sure where the sub-categories of the Med begin and end.)
In Europe.
Has a name in English that was originally given to it by Italians, or folks from a place that is now in Italy. The locals call it something else.

It certainly is, chevvron.
The name 'Corfu' seems to be Venetian, from the period when the island was part of the Venetian Empire, and it is also the current name in Italian as well as in English. The Greeks, however, call it Kerkyra. It also seems to have been governed by the Kingdom of Sicily at one stage, and was also annexed by Italy during the Second World War.
I think it's officially in the Ionian Sea, but as I said, I never quite know where one 'sea' in the Mediterranean Sea ends and another one begins.

Chevvron has called Open House.

Ah didn’t know that, jensdad. An interesting destination with a distinctive smell from the lagoon in high summer, especially in the middle of the night. Well done ea200. Felthorpe, Norfolk it is. Also thnarg who resisted the temptation to open the gate. Many thanks to Felthorpe Aero Club/Flying Group from whose site I borrowed the images of The Tiger Moth and the results of the arson attack on the Hangar in 2003 when nine beautiful, cherished aeroplanes were lost, also the thumbnail of the crashed Trident. Until recently and it still may be there, the airfield was home to a splendid, newly built replica Fokker Triplane.

You don’t have to give away everything but that photo is so pixelated/blurred that I cannot see if it are 2 cows from behind, two horses from the front or 2 elephants with their ears against their head.
Or two road workers in red work clothing.

ea200

They are of course none of those. They are actually people in costume and if I didn't know I wouldn't have a clue from behind either. There are other people in shot with more conventional attire.

As the 24 hours have passed I can confirm that Bear's turd search led him to the correct airfield. Chico Regional in northern California. The airfield existed before WW2 but was leased to the military in 1941 to become an Army Air Corps training base. Returned to the city of Chico after the war but a site just outside the old airfield boundary became a ballistic missile (Titan) launch site between 1961 and 1965. The airfield itself was used for stratospheric balloon launching between 1961 and around 1980. The aircraft in the background of Bear's picture is an AT802 Fire Boss of which quite a few are based there. There is an air museum on site with around 20 aircraft on display together with a fair amount of military and NASA memorabilia.
There is also a very good craft beer brewery nearby (don't ask how I know),

Self Loading Bear has control.

Big enough for a 3 runway arrangement probably dating from its military airbase glory times.

Don't worry thnarg, it has happened before. In fact I think I may have done it myself. If you go to Post 1372 (https://www.pprune.org/11277842-post1372.html) Page 69 you will find an Excell spreadsheet which has details of challenges posted on this thread. A search for the airfield name will show if it has appeared before. At least up until the last update which was about a year ago. With thanks to all those who have contributed to the maintenance of the spreadsheet.
