Kuwait airport fire 'under control'

No staff or passengers were hurt in the blaze

Firefighters have isolated a blaze at Kuwait International Airport which prompted the authorities to suspend all flights.
Officials quoted by the Kuwaiti news agency Kuna said an evacuation of the airport went according to plan and there were no casualties.

The blaze started at about 1730 (1430 GMT) at Departure Gate Five and spread to adjacent gates.

"This led to the suspension of air traffic at the airport," Kuna said.

Senior government and aviation officials are now at the scene assessing the situation with a view to restoring full operations at the airport.

Civil Defence Colonel Jasim al-Mansuri told Kuna that an investigation was under way to determine what caused the fire.

The officials at the scene include Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jabir and Transport Minister Sheikh Ahmad Abdallah al-Ahmad al-Sabah.

The fire was the second this year after a small blaze at the airport on 26 April left no casualties.
