Hello gents,

Is it possible by EASA law for a FI to train and endorse a pilot holding a valid SEP(land) class rating, on variable pitch + retractable undercarriage + turbo on a private aircraft?

I'm struggling on finding an official answer...

thank you in advance!

Do you mean privately owned? Yes
Private Cat C of A disappeared years ago.

If I understand things correctly, it's more about insurance these days. I will not carry out any training or testing unless the aircraft concerned has a clause in the paperwork that allows one or both. Our Arrow is actually insured for full Club use, so we can do ab initio in it when asked and of course complex differences and various tests. At least until May 2021 when the engine runs out of calendar time....

....but if you really are 30 degrees West you may need to consult your local authority.

If on Greenland I think will be the Danes. Otherwise, it's the Antarctic. South Georgia looks close, but not actually on 30W.

I'm not 30°west those coronadays....

To be more precise situation is the following:

I have a friend PPL holder willing to qualify VP+RU+T, to save money he would like to use a local privately owned turbo arrow, not used in any club or flight school. (he probably pay just the gas)

He asked me if a FI could do this difference training on that aircraft and stamp the logbook, without going trough a DTO/ATO ($$$$)

I can't find any clear reference and I got difference feedback, all of them without any official reference...

Thanks for your help

There is no requirement for differences training in TMG. SEP, SET or MEP aeroplanes to be completed within a DTO/ATO unless the manufacturer requires it in the OSD-FC.
FCL.710 Class and Type Ratings - Variants
(b) The differences training shall be conducted at any of the following:

(1) an ATO;

(2) a DTO in the case of aircraft referred to in points (a)(1)(c) and (a)(2)(c) of point DTO.GEN.110 of Annex VIII;

(3) an AOC holder having an approved differences training programme for the relevant class or type.

(c) Notwithstanding the requirement in point (b), differences training for TMG, single-engine piston (SEP), single- engine turbine (SET) and multi-engine piston (MEP) aeroplanes may be conducted by an appropriately qualified instructor unless otherwise provided in the OSD.

Thank you Billie, would you be so kind to quote the source?

I just checked on EASA part FCL and it's even less detailed:FCL.710 Class and type ratings — variants

(a) In order to extend his/her privileges to another variant of aircraft within one class or type rating, the pilot shall undertake differences or familiarisation training. In the case of variants within a type rating, the differences or familiarisation training shall include the relevant elements defined in the operational suitability data established in accordance with Part-21.

(b) If the variant has not been flown within a period of 2 years following the differences training, further differences training or a proficiency check in that variant shall be required to maintain the privileges, except for types or variants within the single-engine piston and TMG class ratings.

(c) The differences training shall be entered in the pilot’s logbook or equivalent record and signed by the instructor as appropriate.

(a) Differences training requires the acquisition of additional knowledge and training on an appropriate training device or the aircraft.

(b) Familiarisation training requires the acquisition of additional knowledge.

I think you may be looking at an out-of-date copy of the regulation. The current text of FCL.710, as amended by Regulation 2019/1747, is as I have quoted it above.
