Instructing on a Class 2?

Hi everyone.

The ongoing saga of my potentially dodgy kidneys continues.
Good news though, a particularly helpful AME has advised me that I should be fine to hold and maintain a Class 2 and regain it again should I require a kidney transplant.
Initially I was most pleased- I thought that with major organ issues even a Class 2 would be off the cards, it seems not!
However, to my horror, all FI jobs I have looked at so far require a Class 1!
For those of you that are FI's or work in the GA sector, is it normal for schools to only employ FI's with a Class 1, which makes me attempting to become a career instructor in a Class 2 pointless?
I used to work at a nice little grass strip (as a potwasher!) and I know that for us we pretty much only hired Integrated graduates from the major schools (L3 and CAE will not train me with an OML so commerical is off the cards).

I know some would say to give up at this point and settle for a desk job, but my heart wants to fly and to teach people that joy too.

There are lots of PPL flying instructors with Class 2 medical certificates. I had to drop down to Class 2 a few years ago after a heart attack. I cannot understand why a flying school should insist on Class 1 for PPL instructors.

ATOs that are carrying out training for the commercial and instrument rating may well have that requirement. (They usually want, as a minimum, CPL holders with an IR, for obvious reasons) Other ATOs and certainly DTOs, why would they?

I've been carrying on as a CFI happily now, for more than six years, with just a Class 2. Class 1 became a waste of money for me. Only one of my instructors still bothers to keep his.

A Class 1 is only required if you are exercising CPL privileges, you can instruct, be an examiner and paid on a Class 2 so where is the problem? You don't even need a Class 1 to teach modular IR. The only place where a Class 1 is neeeded is to instruct on CPL courses including Integrated courses which are for a CPL.

timprice, this was my concern. If having only a Class 2 will severely hamper my job search and career development, I'm not sure it's worth the disappointment of training only to end up working in an office again.
