Hi,

Has anyone been to THR in Iran? Any advice, things to do or not to do?

How safe is flying over Iran territory?

thanks!

I'm Canadian, not American. Big, big difference!

Experience from a couple of years ago ( a few times, for work, also in Shiraz. ) . no problem at all. Extremely friendly population. very safe, no crime . drawback : As a woman you have to wear a head scarf to cover at least half your hair. all the time . but not in private homes.
Not to do : try to shake hands with women , talk about religion , getting involved in political discussions in public.
Nuisance , you will be constantly reminded that the US are causing the hardship they endure because of the sanctions .
The vast majority of the educated people are against the regime. unfortunately for them they are the minority in numbers in the country .
Booze if you must : avail in Christians outlets and in private homes, no need to bring some with you.

In my time , it was very safe , ATC there is quite efficient and working well. Now , after the recent shot down , I do not know...The revolutionary guards are unpredictable , and they are a real problem in the country.

Generally speaking, yes!

Make sure you contact (or attempt to contact) “Air Defence” 10 minutes prior to entering Iranian airspace. Obviously make sure you have all the necessary permits. Facilities and pavement surfaces can be unreliable or poor.

Not been there since 2012 so old info.
omly flew into IKA
Atc very professional and their English was excellent.
DO speak to Air Defence to ensure you are identified prior to entering their airspace.
Respect local culture as and when you encounter it.
I loved the place and people.

In my (not particularly recent) experience of flying from Turkish into Iranian airspace it can sometimes be difficult to raise Air Defence 10 minutes before the FIR boundary. However I was always able to raise the Tehran Radar airway controller who was always happy to relay to air defence. Just don’t arrive unannounced unless you want a welcome committee to intercept.
