Thousands of easyJet and Virgin airline staff are being offered work in the new NHS Nightingale Hospital.

Those who sign up will support nurses and senior clinicians at the coronavirus field hospital in east London, the NHS said.

Virgin Atlantic said furloughed staff who help will be paid through the government retention scheme.

NHS England said many airline staff are first aid trained and already have security clearance.

They workers will be changing beds and performing other non-clinical tasks and helping doctors and nurses working on the wards, the NHS said.

Virgin Atlantic said it has written to around 4,000 employees, while easyJet said it has contacted 9,000 of its UK-based staff - half of whom are first aid trained, the airline said.

I hope its not just the Cabin crew but also that the Pilots get their lazy Class One Medical asses down here to help too, theres a lot of work to be done!

And how would they help exactly? With no medical training of any sort I guess they could be porters?

As a 'critical' transport worker I am told I must stay healthy so that I can fly all those backpacking sons & daughters back to their worried parents from the other side of the world. Or fly critical medical equipment around......

But hey... that not really critical is it?

hunter boy I don't see why Pilots would be turned away when everyone else (>750,000 people) have been accepted as volunteers

I think the criminal/CRB background checks they're likely have undergone to get the air-side passes also makes them a safe option to be around Patients

Yes. You can't work for your normal company but you can volunteer and I believe take course whilst furloughed. We're volunteering our warehouse, staff and vehicles to the police.

If you try to volunteer, you will find they currently do not need you unless medically trained, also surprisingly I have not had an e-mail back on Blood Donation , guess they maybe busy elsewhere just now.

It's many years since I last worked in an ICU, but ventilated patients have all manner of monitoring equipment whose data requires monitoring; pilots would be skilled enough to understand the data, learn the parameters which are safe and which are not. Of course, I'd rather have an experienced ICU nurse, but needs must

You cannot get a job whist the government are paying your wages.

In this particular case, you would be one of the few actually earning that money.

Yes furloughed workers can volunteer, providing they do not work for their employer - or generate any revenue for them while on Furlough.

In this particular case, you would be one of the few actually earning that money. Employees can work for another employer while on Furlough (ie have and maintain two or more jobs) and the monthly limit on earnings is apparently per job / employment.
There in no problem, volunteering for the NHS while furloughed - it is being encouraged.

Are you sure? From everything i have read and as an employer, you can have a second job and still be furloughed as many people do have two jobs anyway. You will still be furloughed by the one company and this is not affected by the other job as it's a totally separate contract of employment. I believe you could even be furloughed twice.

Employees cannot do any work for employers whilst they are on furlough. They can do volunteer work, or training if this does not provide services to or for the employer, or generate revenue for the employer

Definitely not. Employees cannot undertake work for or on behalf of an employer that has furloughed them. The guidance says that this includes “providing services or generating revenue”. If they do any work for you then you may have to repay the grant.

We recommend drawing this to the attention of any furloughed employee who could otherwise be doing some work from home. It is important that they don’t do anything that could jeopardise your ability to claim the grant.

Directors and owner-managers can be furloughed if on PAYE and will still be allowed to do statutory duties in these roles – this will not count as work which disqualifies them from the grant.

Yes that’s correct, they cannot work for the company who has furloughed them but that does not stop them working for other companies, so long as their contract of employment allows this and/or their employer agrees.
