I just read that a flight from London to Los Angeles produces 5.5 tonnes of CO2 per person on an airline - about double the CO2 produced by a "typical family car".

Got me to thinking about how much CO2 my Archer produces - it has a 180HP Lycomming engine an 0-360-A1A

Does anyone know how much CO2 I would produce per tach hour at around 2300rpm?

Just trying to work out just how much despoiling of the planet I am doing.

CO2 is produced by combustion from the carbon in the fuel.
Since your Archer burns what is essentially petrol, directly comparing the ratio of fuel consumption with a petrol car will also yield the ratio of CO2 production compared to the car.

In round numbers, burning Avgas or petrol produces 3 times its mass in carbon dioxide.
So if you're burning 40 litres an hour, that's about 29kg that will be putting out about 87kg of CO2 per hour of flight time.

LHR to LAX is about 4800 nm. So the equivalent in an Archer would be about 40 hours or about 3.5 tonnes of CO2.

If you have 4 on board that's less than a tonne each!

Egads! I was thinking about this recently, and figure that in my private flying career, I've burned more than 300,000 liters of Avgas/Mogas. I'm feeling somewhat guilty now! I guess my only compensation is that I also own 80 acres of mature trees, so hopefully they're sucking some of it back in!

Yebbut you would have burned as much or more making the same journey by road.
Probably more because leftpondians tend to drive gas guzlers.

I have burnt that (and JetA1) in around 6 months. I am going to burn in hell...........
