Kuwait is largely shutting itself down as the COVID-19 coronavirus (https://fortune.com/tag/coronavirus/) pandemic continues to spread.
The country has announced plans to halt all commercial flights (https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-kuwait/kuwait-to-halt-commercial-passenger-flights-declare-public-holiday-idUSKBN20Y2FL) beginning on Friday, with the exception of cargo flights. As of Wednesday morning, there were 70 people infected (https://www.kuna.net.kw/ArticleDetails.aspx?id=2875314) with the virus in the country.
Some exceptions will reportedly be made for Kuwaiti nationals attempting to return home.
While it has become common for airlines to cancel flights due to the impact of coronavirus, Kuwait is the first country to take the step of closing its airport. Saudi Arabia, though, did temporarily halt the entry (https://www.bbc.com/news/world-51737226) of pilgrims who wanted to visit religious sites.

As is customary, just prior to the announcement of the airport closure by the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), the DGCA said there was no truth to the rumor.
