View Full Version : Transferring to TC from an airport

I was wondering whether there's any precedent for an APS/ADC rated controller at a NATS airport transferring to TC?

Wouldn't mind doing this in a couple of years, maybe, but not sure if it can be done.

In October 1993 there was a tidal wave of such transfers!

Yes it does happen, a friend & colleague is doing that right now, & he's not the only one. It's not an automatic process though.

How about folks who are ex-NATS and would like to rejoin the fold?

Yep, that happens too.

Fine if one doesn't mind going down a long 'pay and seniority snake'...

Not necessarily, it depends on the circumstances at the time.

In Talkdownman's case it was an advertised vacancy for a post he had already done and the HR people still wouldn't offer decent terms; they treated me badly too when I asked about staying on after I was 60 years old.

Nats contacted me out of the blue and invited me to re-join to cover staff shortage. The terms were severely reduced because of 'broken service', would you believe. Maybe they were just having a laugh! Whatever, Nats' loss!

However, the OP & the subsequent poster are asking about the situation as it is, rather than as it may have been some time ago.

So I 'walked' at 60 and became a FISO; as has been said, NATS' loss.

There are external VNs that come up from time to time, and there are plenty of folks in NATS having gone elsewhere for a bit. No issues. And no harm in reaching out.

Just to add some perspective..
For every ATCO that gets an internal transfer to another unit in Nats, there are tens who request it but don't get it.
Getting a transfer in Nats is the exception, not the norm.

and it's one thing getting the posting, quite another actually getting released from your (inevitably) understaffed unit
