Major re-edit with more info. It hit a lamp standard on the corner of a hangar at 1630 local. Independence is about 60 miles away from home base at Dubuque, so he should have been thinking of getting back with sunset just after 5. Solo student. Wx conditions unknown.

Bwoah.... I wonder what caused the front of the cockpit to be torn away like that. If that's from the crash I think it's more than just a rollover

Conjecture: if the pilot was still in the cockpit when the fire/rescue folks arrived, it would not be unusual for them to cut away the body of the helicopter to access, stabilize and extricate the pilot. I used to do this work myself, once upon a time. It tends to make the damage appear dramatically worse on any vehicle, cars, airplanes or helicopters.

I considered that option, hence my use of "if that's from the crash". Hopefully you're correct though

Methinks your gibe is a bit premature. How about we wait for some actual NTSB reporting, first? Or do you know exactly how this happened and would care to enlighten us? However, if all he did was move too close to an obstacle while otherwise being under complete control, which seems likely, I am not disappointed that fenestron control issues are not to blame.

Absolutely. Robinson bad news seems to somehow travel faster, though, so usually people beat me to it.
