Normally I dwell on the rotorheads forum so if this needs to be relocated please do so...

Aerostar crashed two nights ago and couldn’t find any threads on this. I am not familiar with the airport/area so if anyone could dwell light on the approaches available that would be interesting for me. Apparently this was a private flight and crashed during bad weather on approach/landing.

Overall a sad event but as with any incident I hope some lessons may come of this and carry on Alex’s legacy of teaching future pilots, albeit not in the way he would like.

Nanaimo is a non-towered airport, that has scheduled flights using Q400 and 737 aircraft.

It has one 6600’ runway 16/34. The available approaches from the north are NDB 16 and NDB/DME 16:

The Aerostar crashed near the MAPEK 8 DME intersection.

There is also an ILS 16 approach that is marked RESTRICTED, although presumably there is nothing to stop a pilot using it for guidance while flying the NDB approach.

Pilot seems to have been Alex Bahlsen (https://www.welt.de/vermischtes/article204275422/Alex-Bahlsen-Bahlsen-Erbe-stirbt-bei-Flugzeugabsturz-in-Kanada.html) fellow heir of the german cookie empire Bahlsen / Lorenz snack world.

News now says that the pilot reported an equipment failure prior to the accident.

They need to check the pneumatic manifold, looks to me that he had unreliable artificial horizon.

RIP Alex an Aerostar pilot
