Of course, there were wonderful fireworks. Surprising they didn't deviate to the right to get a better look. What could go wrong?

Not great but the proximity to those things that go bang was probably the greater threat.

Watch right at the end. Capt in left hand seat pans right to film the fireworks and FO is also filming on his phone. Really, are they 10 to be that impressed by fireworks and so unprofessional? and there are people on here who say pilots are miles smarter than doctors because there are fewer pilots than doctors. It makes me very worried.

Re the F/.O taking photos with his phone on finals that reminds me of a line in an old French movie where the capt is trying to land a DC3 with 1/4 flaps on a very small bush runway :
F/O : We are not going to make it !
Capt : Yes, but why are you taking your camera out ?
F/O : Since we are going to crash I want to immortalize the moment.!

For those subject to US regulations, the use of any personal electronic device (PED) is prohibited by a crew member occupying a control seat from brake release to brake set. An electronic flight bag is only an EFB while accessing required flight material, any other use turns the EFB into a PED.

FAR 121.542:

(d) During all flight time as defined in 14 CFR 1.1 (https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/14/1.1), no flight crewmember may use, nor may any pilot in command permit the use of, a personal wireless communications device (as defined in 49 U.S.C. 44732(d) (https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/49/44732#d)) or laptop computer while at a flight crewmember duty station unless the purpose is directly related to operation of the aircraft, or for emergency, safety-related, or employment-related communications, in accordance with air carrierprocedures approved by the Administrator.

So the EGPWS 1000 foot call goes off and 14 seconds later one of them calls "gear down" (what height above ground are they at by this time) and I can't hear a landing checklist being conducted, then almost immediately after we hear another EGPWS call. Then we see both pilots are seen with their phones filming the fireworks... Who's minding the store?

If I were the chief pilot, they would both be fired or at the very least a nice suspension without pay!

Some may remember...
-Diverted attention If the pilots were listening to a soccer match on the radio, their attention was surely diverted from flying the aircraft and monitoring their situation. (http://aviationknowledge.wikidot.com/asi:varig-flight-254:downed-by-a-decimal-point)

There are suggestions that the flight crew was listening to Brazil vs. Chile World Cup match in the radio1 (javascript:;), another example of a hazardous attitude.

Worst written regulation contender (specifically this part: 'a personal wireless communications device (as defined in 49 U.S.C. 44732(d) (https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/49/44732#d))" . You can use a full size video/SLR as long as it doesn't have WiFi or Bluetooth, or watch movies on a 40" monitor hooked up to a portable DVD player (again, just make sure no WiFi/Bluetooth) during the whole flight, but take a picture in cruise of the sunset with your cellphone in airplane mode, and you are in violation of 121.542.

Northwest Airlines flight 188, 21 October 2009 flew 150 miles beyond it's destination. The investigation had the crew admitting to using their laptops to check their schedules which would have placed them in breach of this part of the regs, Lack of information on the CVR meant investigators could not clearly identify any level activity on the flight deck which led to the suggestion that both crew were asleep until awoken by the Flight Attendant Chime asking when they were expected to land. Not relevant to this thread except in terms of what some crews may be doing from time to time (and getting away with). In the cruise is one thing but on short finals? I guess it was CAVOK but some unexpected windshear might have got their attention....or not!

Repetitive and mind numbing until an airplane, it’s passengers, flight attendants and cockpit crew are ground up into little pieces.

Suction cup stuck to the glass in one's immediate front with the camera looking forward screwed to the bendy arm thingy which is secured by the cup. Fly and ignore the camera. The arraignment gives a good result and over the years I've built up an archive of TO/ App/ Ldg/ Taxi video. But don't try to fly by looking through the camera as things will then become a bit wobbly. Actually, things will become extremely very wobbly indeed. (You've been warned.)

If you have a real passion for flying, it will always be a fascinating profession. Not ever mind numbing.
Having said that, it has changed from from the good old days.

Doctors are smarter because they can bury their mistakes, which are numerous.

Not sticking up for them obviously - but what you hear after the 1000’ EGPWS is the landing checklist not a request for ‘gear down’..

Are there any regulations that restrict firework displays near airports?

Are there any regulations that restrict firework displays near airports?
I can't say how it is regulated in any other country, but for us in Finland it is regulated: the organizer has to make an application for the use of fireworks to the local safety authorities well in advance, stating eg area in which the show is to be held and explain that it does not jeopardise any form of traffic, whether in the air or on the ground.
in essence, if one would apply for a fireworks permit next to an active runway short finals, it would most probably be denied by authorities.

As stated, I have no knowledge how it works in any other country, but I would imagine it works somewhat the same way in most countries.

some people tend to think it is flak, there was an article that in UK alone, during this millennium, there has been several direct hits of fireworks leaving scorch marks on aircrafts.

edit: uk caa guidelines: publicapps.caa.co.uk/modalapplication.aspx?appid=11&mode=detail&id=1108

quote:
4 Additional Guidelines for Firework Displays
4.1 Aerial fireworks displays should be limited to a height of 1,500 ft above ground level. Any firework conforming to BS7114/BS EN 14035-36 will not exceed this height.
4.2 Displays within a ten nautical mile radius of an active aerodrome or within an Aerodrome Traffic Zone (ATZ)1 may require notification and co-ordination action and must be notified by the EO to the CAA for consideration.
