View Full Version : Edinburgh Turnhouse ATC Early 1970's

Hi,

I have been going through several of my fathers reel-to-reel tapes, and have come across 1 hour of ATC, Edinburgh Tower and Approach that he taped (I think) before 1975.

It features BealineTridents, BCAL One-Elevens, a Viscount and some other traffic. R/W in use appears to be 13, the aircraft using the "old" terminal and stands.

Would this be of interest to anybody here, and if so, where would be the best place to upload it to / host it?

It is in mp3 format and is 90mb in size.

Interesting pics and audio. And all I can say is that was one very tolerant inbound Beeline pilot!!!

Bealine 8199 was a Viscount arriving from Inverness, then going onwards from Edinburgh to Glasgow.

JSorry for pedantry, but ISTR that BE8199 was Wick-Aberdeen-Edinburgh

Actually it was KOI-WIC-ABZ-EDI.

Interesting that the standard southbound clearance from EDI in those days - even for jets - was to cross TLA at FL40. I note that this was on a very high pressure day (QNH 1038). Presumably the standard clearance changed depending on the prevailing QNH? Otherwise the pax would get a bit of a fright passing TLA (alt 2756ft) at FL40 if, say the QNH was 980 :uhoh:

I wondered about that, too. I have a feeling that TLA at FL60 was more normal. Even the Vanguards could manage that. :O

She was lucky if she managed it all on one flight. The timetable may well have changed over the years, but I'm looking at one that shows the BE8015 routing LSI-KOI-WIC-INV-GLA, connecting at KOI and WIC with the departing BE8199 to ABZ and EDI.

Those were the days ...

Those were the days ...I once had a booking on the short-lived BEA Viscount service EDI-INV. Flight was cancelled (I suspect because of lack of pax) and they put us in a limo to Glasgow, then flew us Glasgow-Benbecula-Stornoway-Kinloss (INV closed for runway works) - plus I got a flight deck ride BEN-SYY, low level VFR up the west coast of Harris. And they apologised for the inconvenience!

.....On reflection, I am sure that you are right. ISTR she had to change at WIC.......the fogginess of time!

IIRC , Going back to 1971 the TLA 40 was a standard clearance with the base at Talla being FL35. I seem to recall that we were aware of possible issues but it didn't bother us much.
If it wasn't a Wednesday afternoon our radar would climb traffic almost immediately after co ordination with Gailes.
On Wednesdays when radar was off , then traffic may have leveled for longer until Scottish had them identified or we did our procedural crossing stuff.
After 1976 life got easier with a new runway and more staff.
