Hi Everyone,
Currently flying SH with low cost and looking into the move to LH with the likes of BA/Virgin.
With my current airline i could potentially be upgraded to command in the next 3-4 years and be on a salary for 120k gross. Joining Virgin or Ba would mean holding off this pay pack until a good few years with seniority and time to command especially on LH. Of course its not all about the money and i can see how the job aspect would be much nicer in these airlines. Does anyone who currently works for or knows anyone who works for BA or Virgin, know roughly what take home net of year1 and year5 FO on a 787 or similar would be? Just to compare the financial aspect of the move. And what hours/layover times are like?
Thanks

Greetings Gavi,

I think you're in the wrong pprune area for this sort of question, and you won't be able to do PMs until you have a significant number of acceptable posts.

You might want to do a bit of reading here - before making any social-life-threatening moves. And you might wish to join Balpa, if not already a member.

Currently Balpa BA are in a bitter struggle with BA/IAG over pay but the underlying problem in the last few years is management's desire to screw any positive life-style benefits out of the BA LH system. BA SH is already screwed because of EASA FTLs and their peculiar pay-scales. Worse pay and scheduling than your average LOCO in the first ten-plus years. Possibly 10 years to LH RHS if joining on SH and probably 20 years plus to LH command regardless.

Folks are leaving BA because of these problems. IMHO only a painful management change will recover the situation. One recent poster has claimed (nb unverified) that the COO told Training Standards they 'are placing too much emphasis on safety.'

VS is in a mess mostly because they have two unions. Both are trying to fight back but the current management try-on is (principally) to introduce a B-Scale for preferably lower-qualified new hires while outsourcing recruitment to a barely-recognisable hiring agency. You might already be over-qualified for VS.

I understand the VS PPU branch is threatening to ballot for another Christmas strike, while VS Balpa is into FTAs on a number of issues.

Good luck, whatever you choose. LFH

Have you asked yourself whether you'd be happy ending your career working where you are now? If the answer is "no", then the money doesn't matter, what matters is getting yourself into a job for life. Whether that is BA, I don't know, but the money is probably not what you should be focussing on.

As others have said you are in the wrong part of the Forum.

Take a look at the BA DEP section that Lordflasheart has linked to in his comprehensive post.

I'll add that BA has changed a lot over the last few years, (e.g; the roster Bidding system has changed radically, and not for the good as far as many people are concerned) so be wary of taking advice from anyone who has been outside the company more than a year or two.

I'd also add the health warning that until the current Industrial unrest is over at BA nobody knows what the industrial landscape for BA pilots will be in the near future. As an example and since you asked about "layover times" - the reduction of the length of some layovers is on the company's wish list.. I'd certainly recommend keeping an eye on developments in the short term and keep all your options open.

Good Luck.
