I generally find David Kahana's posts on Quora well informed. He is highly qualified. I knew a fair amount about the physics of lightning but he is far more up to date.
When I read a book on the subject in the 80's it did little to comfort me on my use of commonly used turboprop flight levels. The first IT's to Spain etc., were mostly 17 and 180. No radar until we had the first 12" dishes fitted in the British Eagle Viscounts.
