Just curious to know how many hours TT people have when strating on the ATPL theory, part time.

180 hours

More Radio Nav/Instrument time/knowledge would have been useful

FAA CPL/IR and 255 hours, and was glad I had the IR experience, it made a huge chunk of air law much easier.

Started my ATPL theoretical distance learning 2 months ago. All I have is a JAA PPL(A) 70 hours TT, and a JAA Class 1 medical.

do you think it would be unwise for me to begin the ATPL distance learning having only just completed a PPL??

moo,

I wished I had started the groundschool after the PPL.

Now I am restricting the amount of flying I do so that I don't go too over budget.

You may decide to give it up after receiving the stack of study folders and you will only have wasted a couple of thousand pounds :D

Good luck

Well as for me, I had around 60 hours TT at the start (and end) of the ATPL theory. I did feel like I was the only one below 100 hours but then I like being different.

Moo...

If you've got a good head for numbers and general aircraft knowledge then I really don't think total hours matters much. As long as you can remember that an aircraft with x number of seats and y number of passengers should have z number of fire extinguishers ..... you get the idea.

Incidentally, I passed all first time with Bristol Groundschool so the hour problem couldn't have been that bad!

Hope this helps!

I take it then most people get the flying experience necessary for start of the CPL module before starting the ATPL theories.........is this by design or more by coincidence?

80 hours TT with just PPL

Hours don't matter at all, unless you have some instrument hours which will make a few of the subjects easier to grasp....

Oh, I got 13/14 first time.... proof of pudding etc etc....

About 6 or 800 + CPL, IR & instructor rating.

The system was/is a bit different in Oz.

Um...about 75-85TT PPL I think....I was working on the IMC rating so I could start the techs by 100hrs TT..

50 hrs.

Started at end of ppl and then made a point of flying as I finished each frame of study. Really helped to swallow the bitter pill of book work

I had 120 hours.

It would have been easier if I had been able to start the ATPL thoery soon after obtaining the PPL/Night, methinks this would have helped with continuity, especially if you're not flying as regularly as you would like.

Good Luck!

Made sure that I could pass the exams before spending the money on flying side of things!

(13/14) Skeet's a clever git tho!

I had 120 hrs and yes, doesn't make a sod of difference for the writtens. Instrument stuff helps, but really a keen background interest in flying will save a lot of hassle at basic stages.

Flying hours only really helps when you get to the flying stages - not too many tho, as you end up struggling to iron-out any bad habits you've taught yourself!

I had UK PPL with about 500hrs when I got this daft idea that I should proceed enthusiastically towards the UK ATPL via the national exams before JAA made things woefully more difficult. Whether or not in fact JAA exams are more difficult is debatable, I suppose, and I am now immune from the need to find out.

I devoutly hope.

But I do not think that my previous experience made a lot of difference to the effort required to pass the exams. They are just bloody hard work. The earlier you start, the earlier you are likely to finish the resits !

ZIP TT, I'm not shure though if I would have been better of with some actual flight experience before starting the written CAA stuff... My opinion was: finish it part by part, you'll get there anyway if you really want to!

rgds, MM and courage / good luck
