Yes, Stanstead is in Suffolk. But...……… Stansted airport is in Essex. Different place.

Folks,
Perhaps it could be re-names Bishop's Stortford International ----( which is what we always called it somewhere in the middle of the last century), that should eliminate any confusion between Stansted and Stanstead.airports.

Folks,
Perhaps it could be re-names Bishop's Stortford International --
Why, when it doesn't actually belong to a Bishop?

I am very, VERY sorry! I have been corrected, and Stortford DOES indeed apparently belong to the Bishop! Thank you for pointing out my ignorance. Every day is a school day.

I will try not to bash the Bishop - sorry - criticise the Bishop again, despite my excitement at my new-found knowledge.

pilotmike,
Maybe, just maybe, because that is the name of the nearby village, ( trying to recall the name of a very pleasant little pub, a welcome respite from jousting with the "Men from the Ministry" examiners) and, if I recall correctly, the name of the all over grass airfield, once in that area.
But you really knew that, didn't you??

I think he was trying to make a comment about the misplacement of the apostrophe (commonly known as the grocer's apostrophe https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/greengrocer%27s_apostrophe), but in this case was incorrect as the town's name is in fact Bishop's Stortford

More importantly, I wonder when the owners of the airport are actually going operate Stansted as an airport rather than a shopping centre and actually spend money on operational infrastructure. The runway is the roughest patchwork quilt of repairs than any other runway in Europe that I am aware of. The taxiways are a in a similar state, riddled with temporary steel plates over all the holes. Perhaps the owners would sort it out if the operators would start suing them for the cost of diversions as the runway is clearly not fit for purpose.

My wife and boys have just landed at STN from Lviv (FR1643). Reports that there was a near miss - plane on runway, passengers screaming / crying.
Is there any way to verify?

Any photos of the runways and taxiways showing such state of disrepair?

Concerning that a fairly major airport would have poor surfacing issues.

You could wonder that about almost any major airport these days.
I believe the quotation was "A large shopping mall with an attached airport".

It cost me half a crown landing fee to take my flying school's Auster there. Sometimes, I'd go up to the tower, have coffee for half an hour and then buzz off. No other movements whatsoever took place in that time.

I wonder when they are going to rename EGCC as London Manchester for our American cousins who believe that London is the whole of England!
