Devasted to read Gary T's report on Yammar about his PRI4 No Sub J class repatriatioin flight back to UK downgraded to PEY after 25 years service.
From GMA , CPBoeing, Director CX People to Veta Manager they should all hang their heads in shame. What an appalling way to treat someone and his wife on their last day.
Just shows what a f****king mess this company is in.

And no apology from the company. After his holiday perhaps GMA will spout more platitudes about "trying to do better" but really this is all a bit of a joke now. I wonder what their PR/HR consultants would say about this terrible treatment of staff.
No repect at all so none will be returned. You reap what you sow Cathay.

There's no love at CX.

Management(Tom Owen's department) know about these issues, they don't care and they aren't going to do anything about it.

You've already given your years of service so they got what they want and you ain't getting what you want.
It's a bit like CX telling you they will review a pay deal after you've signed the agreement...

Small potatoes really and dabz totally correct.. Dir People (the army guy with zero background in HR) doesn't give a sh*t, he only cares about his bonus. Thinking that DFO will even mention this is laughable.

I would totally throw this benefit away to get a 'Real" Medical and Dental plan that won't bankrupt a family... But that won't happen.

But if it is a pilot manager or mason, they get the full works. Framed photo of a CX aircraft ( usually the wrong type ), lunch at Dakotas and a funny handshake with photo and a mention in Wednesdays Funny paper.
Wonder what send off CP Boeing will get ?
Flights looking pretty full down to PER these days.

When is the CP going ?
i was told many years ago that unless you were a mason you had zero chance of even being considered for management not that I would want that job but it was an enlightening observation

what flabergasts me is that any of you continue to be shocked at the contemptible attitude that this company holds us in

i think you are rather overstating the Lodge nonsense. 25 years ago. Maybe. In fact probably. Now... I very much doubt it.

Priority 4, no accom in pong Kong. How about a hotel in HKG until a seat is available. The end of the day, and pay attention folks “ if they ask will you accept PEY, and you say “yes”. You have given them 40k for nothing. Sadly seats seem to become available if you cost them. If you roll they make twice the money. Taking the upgrade off a pax and downgrading you is a win win. It’s a dog eat dog mentality

And your 25 yrs of delivering hundreds of thousands of fare paying people safely to their destination means **** too under the current administration they have either dropped the ball or lost the plot.

Correct. And to boot having paid your tax and gone through all the other formalities it’s tîme to be « offsky « ... not hanging around HK. They sadly know this and you’re over a barrel.

30 Years in CX - 26 as a Captain - and on my Repat flight to LHR (albeit FCL) the Crew at the Check in Desk scrawled "No Lounge" on my Boarding pass. Probably joined before he was born. Now I fly with BA on a Staff ticket. They treat us much better.
I'd rather buy myself a glass of bubbly than have one from Cathay. Just tastes better.

What a joke. Hearing that makes me feel sick. He should be offered a few sets of PRI 4 NOSUB LO tickets for his retirement.

There are plenty of ways this could have been mitigated. But our company seems bent on division, tension, conflict, and disunity.

This should be a real warning for new joiners. You are not joining a company that has your best interests at heart.

How incredibly sad.

I totally agree but we all know he will be given nothing. When you retire at CX, there is no thank you for your years of service.
Their attitude is "there is nothing more we can use him for now, so f%(k him. " Don't even get me started on PRI 29 staff travel... another slap in the face.

The sad and disturbing aspect of this story is the fact that it's a deliberate policy, endorsed by management. It is just one more way for the company to express how little respect they have for you, and your life's long effort on behalf of the company. Needless to say, does anyone here believe that a senior manager would find himself being downgraded on his repatriation flight? No, didn't think so. Be guided accordingly. You only have one career.

What I would wonder is if it’s worth spending 25 years with them, rather than being here posting. And ideally do something about it

I am sorry to hear about stuff like this. You can tell a great deal about someone in how they treat others — particularly in how they take care of and treat the help.

Perhaps things like this are why Mickey Mouse wears a Cathay Pacific watch.

I thought Cathay pilots wear Mickey Mouse watches. My bad! I must have that backwards.

This tale is a great metaphor for all our woes.

Here’s a pilot with literally nothing to lose and he still won’t stand up for himself.

Instead, he accepts being treated sub-standardly, (because of good manners/ professionalism / path of least resistance / shock / or just stupidity - take your pick) and then bleats about it after the fact.

How about when they ask at the gate, “do you want to travel or not”, he says yes, in my booked class, otherwise get me a hotel or your manager, or both.

Now he might be a great guy, absolute gentleman, pleasure to fly with etc etc, but

Stand up for yourself and your entitlements FFS

Yea I have to admit if the jobsworth concerned had asked me “ do you want to travel or not” he’d now be drinking congee through a straw and requiring the assistance of a maxillofacial surgeon as frankly I’d have nothing to lose.

Ron you clearly haven't a clue. So to help you not make the mistakes you outlined above let me tell you this. When you leave on your repatriation flight you are leaving Hong Kong and on an assigned date. To collect your PF tax free you MUST leave HKG before midnight that day or else it is subject to HKG tax. So to refuse to get on , ask for a hotel for the night would cost the company HKD2000 but the pilot potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars. So get real, get your facts straight or better still shut the f****k up. The guy in question is a great guy, great pilot and now thankfully enjoying his retirement away from tough guy morons like you.

If it is such a critical event then why would you attempt to get out on the last flight possible before midnight? I call BS. Could always catch a ferry to Macau!
Would it not be prudent in such a risky venture to plan to leave HK a few days before your “official” HKIRDetc leaving date?

united you are totally wrong , you can pick up your provident fund and remain in HK without any tax implications . You could start a new job with a new employer the very next day again without tax implications . The only problem is if you decided to continue as say a sim instructor with Cathay because that is considered continuous employment . I have a number of friends who have left Cathay collected their provident fund and remained in HK without issues

Wrong. Gary was under the old PF scheme which has different rules.

Eh - at least he got to leave CX & HK.

And you would have something to lose - your freedom for a while. Brutally beating someone to the extent they need facial reconstruction surgery will get you serious jail time in HK. Without intent - up to 3 years, with intent - up to life. As it sounds you have intent, I would think over 3 years.

Globo being referred to as a "Prat", "Moron" and now coming out on our esteemed public platform says it all about the loser. Always did open his Gobo before thinking. Back to thread though ; I too was sickened by the Retirees treatment. CX , once the legacy carrier of choice now managed as a loco. GF wasn't much better. We were given Staff Travel benefits which were for life in retirement. They were not great but not bad either. They were diluted after a couple of years after the threat of complete withdrawal and then withdrawn anyway. On my leaving flight, it was Firm First but we were kept by the moronic gate guy , at the gate, denied boarding until he was satisfied that no last second joiners would come tearing down the mile & a half between check-in and boarding . We were reluctantly allowed to board at door close time into the empty FC cabin. Boy, did I savour my Jack & coke without looking back.

Unlike Arfur Dent, we have no Saff Travel in GF retirement. I Have to slip into me shell suit and line up in the baffle queue with, at least, my firm ticket on Easy like everyone else.

Might try pitching up with my Retired Senior Captain GF ID though, at the BA desk & ask for an ID90.

Ah Gordo old fruit. It was an attempt at humour. And given that United’s post are invariably specious bs it wasn’t all that difficult.
I’m no more gay than you Gordon... wasn’t that a type of Scottish reel ?
I’ve lived here long enough to know the Gweilo always comes off worse... and the reference to broken teeth etc was, of course, bluster.
However, if it gives United biscuits the chance to call
me a moron, then it’s obviously worth it.
Gordo, riddle me this. The boredom of retirement aside, why do you lurk on the FH Forums ? Vicarious pleasure. ? Did you fail the ASL selection ( unlikely I know, basic requirements were a pulse and an urge to screw over someone’s seniority) or what. ?
Shell suit... very 90’s... standard attire of the punters you used to fly. Funny how the world goes full circle.
Hope that was considered enough for you.
